Thanks jonny. I'll take a look at it. With my slow-assed internet connection, it will take a while to just read about the service. Gator

Keep me posted on this one, but call me a skeptic. The only way the do-not-call-list worked was through a threat of fines and prison. This enterprising company doesn't have a stick to make it work. Spam is less costly and more international than the telephone, so even a US law won't keep away the Nigerian scams. If this do-not-spam database is made available to legitimate bulk emailers (ha! is there such a thing?) then the spammers will also get ahold of it, with a gold mine of fresh addresses as well. My take - they want you to register and help them develop a database of snail mail and email addresses. They will use it to send you stuff. Maybe not by email. Another clue is that you have to certify that you are over 13 - US laws on gathering data online for marketing does offer some protection to children, and they want info from older teens and adults. This is from their terms of service: Quote:Any information, including but not limited to information, remarks, suggestions, ideas, custom graphics, or other submissions (collectively or individually, “Submission”), communicated to ETHICAL EMAIL through Our Websites is the exclusive property of ETHICAL EMAIL. ETHICAL EMAIL is entitled to use any Submission for any purpose without restriction or compensation to the person sending the Submission. |
| Translation: By signing up, you make your information our information. This policy really inspires confidence: Quote:It is the goal of ETHICAL EMAIL and its affiliates to be as accurate as possible in its product and/or services descriptions. However, ETHICAL EMAIL does not warrant that product and/or services descriptions or other content of this site is accurate, complete, reliable, current, or error-free. If a product and/or service offered through Our Websites is not as described, the Member’s sole remedy is to terminate his or her Membership. |
| Translation: We have a goal of telling you what we are all about, but won't guarantee that what we tell you is accurate. If we change our plans from 'preventing spam' to 'promoting spam' all you can do is 'quit.' And we still own your data.

Other tips for stopping spam

1) find an ISP that filters spam. Some do, some don't. And trust that they will not throw away things you wanted to read. 2) Filter it yourself. The Mozilla mail client (free) has a decent spam filter on it. This route is a little more involved, but I think its worth it. 3) Get an email address that is hard to guess (xkdfjdl@somewhere.com instead of bob@somewhere.com) and never put that address on a web page in text form. If its text, it will be harvested by hundreds, nay thousands of spambots. To make your address available, turn the text into a graphic and post that on your page.

I think I'll pass on this one. My ISP blocks spam and so does my firewall. Don't want to look and find myself on a search engine... purpleydog

I just upgraded to DSL and my ISP has a firewall I'm behind and they have an email spam blocker called Postini. So far it works great. I get about 3 emails a day. Now all I need is a computer that can keep up.
