I need your help (the English language)

Hi to you all.... Ok... I have never been so good in English and “to be perfect” I need to know if you understand my words (I feel embarassed )! Thank you marvellous creatures..... it is important because I will speak to some students (50-60), and they come from Florida...... awwwww.... BTW, I'm happy if I have the opportunity to experience that! _______________________________________ City of Science at the University of Udine. In the analysis of a work as vast and complex as City of Science at the University of Udine, which rises from a level plane of 30 hectres adjacent to an important road infrastructure that connects it to the historic centre and the large regional highway, an athenaeum composed o the faculties of agriculture, engineering, and science, able to accommodate 4.500 students and about 1.000 technical and teaching staff, the first question that comes to mind is: what rapport exists between the new project and the existing fabric? Its strong image is spontaneously associated by attentively observing the general plan – the vital nucles of the entire plant, its pulsing core – with a regulating web, a kind of casrum, that repeats itself in a sequence and forms, with the other volumes, a little city complete in its design. The same plan, in another way, evokes by its regularity a Roman centurio – the organism of the agrarian territory that finds its originating foundations within orthogonal principles. The main organism is in a quartered framework overlooking four large courtyards and forming, in harmony with the medieval cloister tradition, the originating nuclei of upon wich the rest of the university is based. The presence of the portico, united with the courtyard, shows the designers’s attention to proving a serene and pleasing soace for the user. Itis a space that by its nature invites the exchange of information, socialising, and a certain rendering of a more open and less bureaucratic rapport between tacher and student wh are both protagonist in the exstraordinary adventure o knowledge. In front of this part of the peoject we find the large classrooms, on the opposite side appear the laboratories and on the right, almost closing the entire build nucleus, or rather, opening it towards the green of the park with the athletic complex, are located the general services including a cafeteria, central library, administration and bursar’s office cocluding with the main lecture tehatre able to accommodate a thousand spectators. If we actually attentively obseve the main organism, which at first glance appears to evoke Roman settings, we can notice in the sequence of porticoed spaces and closed squares some elements that comprise the spirit of the medieval fabric of Udine. Beyond the porticoes and the balanced dimensions of the open spaces, the rusty pink color of the building exteriors recalls the ancient colours of the city of Udine as in the pink and white stone of the municipal building. The Porto Torres Industrial Port, Sardinia: the principal wave protection works and the docking wharf for bulk-loading ships. The project consisted of the completion of the earlier-existing outer breakwater, carried out by the costruction of a structure 1.500 m long having the dual function of protection works for the port infrastructures and dock for bulk-loading ships. The structure is composed od a part springing from terra firma of the dumped-fill type, of a vertical-wall structure made up of caissons having four files of cells, and of the dock itself, it too formed of celled caissons. INSPECTIONS AND CHECKS During the design phase all the usual checks were made, aimed at ascertaining the structures’ safety both as regards overall stability and the stability of the component members. The structure checks on the caisons were made with the usual construcion science methods, considering the forces trasmitted by the water, by the aggregates and by the concrete fill duting the various contruction phases. Checks were also made on the quality of the matirials used: the cement, the improved-bond steel rebars and the dywidag bars used toprestress the beams. Special attention was devoted to plant-checking the precast beams, for each of which a special data card was made up that gives the complete history of the concrete and of the cable-tensioning. To check the operation of teh structures both hydraulically and statically, a complex of instruments was installed, including a diectional wavemeter set somewhat seaward of the breakwater, in a position not disurbed by reflections, and a series of cells for measuring the pressures acting on the seaward wall and on the bottom, as well as accelerometres and level meteres, wich were installed both on a perforated-wall caisson and on a plain-wall caisson. The results of all these measurements acquired to date are of considerable interest, especially as regards the behaviour of the horizontal and uplift pressures at the various elevation reached by the waves. ___________________________________ It was an hard work!

Hi Zaira, I think you need someone in your field to look at it. Are you a civil engineer or architect? It reads like a technical document for one of those fields, it would be hard for a layman to tell you if many of those words are correct. Interesting organic references to the buildings, is this common? John

Zazi, It seems pretty good, I am running it through a spell checker and then looking for grammer problems, I will then send it to you through email. It would probably be best to take examples from diffrent people becouse one should guess how you wanted to phrase the sentence. Opus/Paul

| If this is a speech it reads fine. But honestly, it has many grammar and spelling mistakes. For instance, the first paragraph is one long run-on sentence. You are not publishing are you? If not, it should make a fine speech. EDIT I meant to ask, what school are the students from that you will be talking to? Just curious.

Sure there are misspellings Z, but everyone does that and the spellcheck emails you get will fix it. I didn't notice the run-on sentence but John D is right. Not much to complain about, kid You handle this goofy language better that I do most of the time. I'm not that fussy. In other words, it should be fine. Charlie
