Athos, Go get some ordinary bird seed at the store that you feed wild birds with. Small seeded stuff. Got a family of them right out my back door and that seems to be all they eat as they are at the feeder all day. Linda

Don't know if they need a heat source - some hatchlings do. This page says that button quail do (maybe they are smaller than regular quail?): http://www.gsu.edu/~biojdsx/fowl/bquail.htm

Get a hold of the wifelife dept in your area and they will get to the right folks to help out!!! GO NOW what the heck are you waiting for!!!! Also try the fish and game dept too!! Till then, a heating pad on low under several towels or blankets. Get your blender and grind up some worms and bugs from the yard. Fill a med syringe (sp) one for kids and gently open the mouth and push the syringe in an little then squeeze the stuff down a little atta time. Every 2 hours or so youll know when they are hungry. Cus they aint quite!!! Did this w/ doves after Hurricane Agnus hit in 72. Best of luck, Leesa

Go to the pet store and get some hand-rearing formula, most formulas just require the addition of warm (100-110F) bottled (Not distilled) water. Use a plastic eyedropper to feed, becareful cause their beaks are very soft. While you there talk to the peeps there and you can get a book on how much and how often to feed them, if not let me know and I will walk you through it. Wendy.....can you add to this? ................................jonny

Hey athos, You may wanna watch out for local DNR regulations. Chances are they require some sort of permit for the possession of live wild game - even if you're doing rehab work. (Stupid rules, I know ... but I wouldn't want to see a fellow clusterbud getting in trouble for doing good) Actually, I did similar things as a kid with orphaned wood duck ducklings. It's amazing to see how quickly they grow & take off on their own. The state I grew up in required a permit to do this & one of my buds uncles happened to have one. Take care BruceD

I used to have quail and raised chicks....used to have chickens roo with LOTS of peeps for over 10 years....also raised parakeets for several years also. If you have some sort of feed store nearby or even a Tractor Supply or Farm and Fleet type store they should have feed that will be good for chicks. My baby ckicks would hatch and I'd peck on the ground in front of them which would get there undieing attention and they run and peck at the feed I set down for them like how the mom teaches them. There's alot of special exotic feeds now easy to find at most of the stores carrying feeds or stores I mention'd or pet stores. Jus ask em about it.......the grain equity's can sell you feed "just for them" also and can get it by the bag or the pound. I raised my quail chicks in an aquarium to keep them draft free with screen top. They loved bread.....make sure they have fresh clean water too cuz with birds it can turn very unhealthy fast with bacteria's. Good luck........bird advice Pam PS: Quail can become canibal's to each other......so can chickens. It's pretty bazaar !!! One tiny injure'd spot send em all in a pecking frenzy. I used a purple spray for animals on the red area or injury spot to mask the red . Pretty crazy I'll agree but I seen it ALOT of times !!!! In healthy chicks and birds !

Never hand reared quail, as although we have a pair in the bottom of our aviary (they clear up the canary and finch shit!) we always take their eggs away from them (sorry, I know that's mean, but that's what we do) All I can add to Jonny's info is that you can also buy stuff called "egg food" from Petshops. It is a crumbly powder you mix with warm water and birds use it to feed their fledglings and the fledglings then eat it themselves when they are able. When this is depends how young they are. If they are really tiny, they will need formula as Jonny says. This egg food should be used while fledglings are tiny before you start giving them 'real' food such as seed or bugs as their digestive systems are probably not ready to deal with those yet. When they are, our quail just eat the same bird seed the other birds eat (finch and canary seed mixes) they also love pecking at greenstuff such as salad veg and weeds from the garden. Wendy

Athos Found this page about rearing quail chicks for you http://www.cyberquail.com/careofchicks.html Wendy also, if you manage to succesfully rear them (hope so) and you need to find homes for them, find people who have outdoor aviaries and tell them quail are the best ever cleaner-uppers and need no special care at all. You just let them live in the bottom of the aviary and they are quite happy eating what the other birds drop.

Quail. They go nice with a decent Merlot. Here you are trying to raise `em, while they're such a tasty fowl/mammialian BBQ'd treat. Roxy's Pappy {Pappy Roxy, or Poxy, as we called him, God Rest His Soul} used to nail the suckers with a .22 hip shot. I've blown off about 1,000 20 guage rounds, and have yet to nail one of the little quick-flying bastiches. The inequity of it all......... Remember the Merlot, RJ

Have you ever eaten quail? No... I can tell. Because if you had, we wouldn't be having this conversation. Raise em up good, pluck em, roll em in a bit of spice and fry or bake them. Yuuuum yum!
