This may sound silly....

I've started to talk to  someone who works as an EMS with his local fire dept.   We started to discuss CH, and he asked me a technical question that he is curious about.   If by chance you were to get into an ER situation...would you be able to tell the ambulance people yes or no if they asked if you were a CH patient?

Reason for his question... if his team enconters a person who is presenting with head pain...no sign of trauma...if they would be able to answer the question of "do you suffer from....ch...migraine etc..."

I believe that he is asking a legitimate question in order to best provide help......

Would you be able to answer that to an EMS or EMT if asked during a Kip 10?   Or Would you be more apt to be  saying "just shoot me now" and not be able to give background info...?

My reply in a level 10 would be something like:

"YES I'VE GOT FUCKING CLUSTERS AND I'M GETTING TORTURED OUT OF MY FUCKING SKULL RIGHT FUCKING NOW! FUCK!!!"

Yep, I could do it, unless I have temporarily passed out from the pain, which happens sometimes.

Peace,

Thinking back to my worst hit ever, yes, I could tell them if they asked. I would tell them if they didn't ask and tell them what I needed for help too. It might take a while to explain, but I could do it. For me anyway it would be like using my last ounce of strength to call for help if I was trapped in a house fire or some equally bad situation. The will to live so to speak...

Damn right I could tell `em. On top of that, I carry a CH card in my wallet..........not that I'd be able to dig it out and rationally present it........especially since it's not worth the the ink used to print it as far as the medical profession is concerned......but, yeah....I could do that.
On the other hand......I'd never do the ER thing. Ain't judging, just commenting. Reckon I'm just lucky.

Not a silly question at all.

Could I do it during a KIP10?

I have only had four 10's in 26 years, but yes, I was able to tell them.  I know the flowery language that I used is not what they normally hear, but I did get my point across ... I guess it was very similar to Nixon's tapes ...  There were more "Expletive deleted" than actual text!  (or am I dating myself here?)

Yes, I could do it.  (you just had to filter out most words, and only listen to every fifth word!)

Hap is right. Some kind of medical alert thing is handy. Epileptics carry cards to speak for them. CH patients are different but it can't hurt to produce something with information. Maybe just make your own and even laminate the thing. Put your doctor's number on it, etc.   Use your imagination.

The worst thing that can happen is that they pay no attention to it.  Think about it kids.

Good question,

Ive thought about this myself before. I have had a few kip 10's and unlike others, I would be unable to tell them what the problem was. I can only scream and grunt. I get a lock jaw type problem where I clench my jaw so tight I cannot speak. I am also unable to actually process thoughts and convey them into words!!

Ive thought about have an OUCH clusterheadache bracelet made, like the old "allergic to penicillin "ones.

Yes I can and did! I got a concussion and had to go to ER by ambulance. On the way I got hit with a CH. The EMT didn't even argue with me when I told him to put the O2 on me and at what speed.

But the ER nurse was a little more of a problem. He wanted to ASK me questions before he got my head unstrapped and I got to my meds. When he asked me if I were pregnant - it was not a pretty sight!!!!! He was standing rather close and my hands got hold of his throat. Luckily the doctor KNEW what CH was and told him to unstrap me and asked what meds I needed. The nice doc did tell me I had to quit choaking the jerk so he could undo me. The nurse got a really fast course in CH.

But I do keep the sense of mind to GIVE ORDERS when I need help.

Maybe we need to start a program for EMT's and ER nurses.

Yes I could tell them. Hopefully they understaood what CH was. I would hate to try and teach a class in the midst of a K10 what the fuck it was int he first place.  It is bad enough when I still get the speach of "you cant possible have CH you are a female."  Think my favorite one was when the Doc said that "Clusters are extremely rare and considering I am female I am simply wasting thier time and taking up space that someone with a REAL condition needed. " Thought that doc was going to die that time. Of course, it was a great help that my husband was checking me in and he was not in the room.  The doc did not like it when I told him that "If I was wasting his fucking time and space then why not give me the treatment I was asking for so that I could get the fuck out of his way."     Angry

Shit yeah....

Course I would tell em anything to get O2 if I was suffering THAT bad during an attack. Grin

Brings me back to a "Life Alert" question raised several and some times ago....why isnt there a card, I.D. of some sort briefly explaing CH and that you are a sufferer? whatever happened with that? Diabetics have it, heart patients have it, as well as many other illnesses....might help save ya a trip to jail if ya had/caused an accident cause you were driving when your CH came on suddenly without warning. At least would be a reasonable explanation for what caused the accident in the event you couldnt speak or werent able to communicate and get treatment........

Thank you all for your answers.

Barb, the comment about the training program is sort of something he was talking about getting brought up at their next seminar.  Try to get someone in to give them some information.  He says that they are only allowed to administer 02 at a max of 7 lmp (I think thats right).

I also like the idea of a medic alert bracelet or something...with the range of meds many of us take daily prolly wouldn't be a bad idea at all....

Dude I hear ya, when you start the chant the house gets real quiet .....fast LOL..

In the old days when you went to the ER because you thought for sure death was near, they didn't do shit. By the time the Doc actually would get to you it was over and then you had to go through all the bullshit and wait for them to tell you it was probably a bad  migraine. "Was there any nausea" NO
LOL

But definately I say I need Imetrex right away and most ER nurses know I'm not some junky looking for a fix LOL.
