drug company scum. Not necessarily CH

So I read today that just in the very remote chance that someone digs the new bizarre prescription drug cards, the drug companies have seen to that. Turns out that drug company prices have risen 27.6% in the last 4 years, especially for the drugs most used by seniors while inflation has risen 10.4%. Don't you love American ingenutiy? It's like getting $3,000 back on a car purchase while the price rises $4,000. Charlie

Sorry hun. That sucks. Seems like you might even be better contacting the drug company and seeing if you can get on a program. It would be better then nothing.

In another light, I receive a letter from the health insurance company that my health insurance Premiums are only going up 10% this year from $562 to $618 per month in July. Aren't I lucky?

I understand where you're coming from Cootie. My company provided insurance ends May 31. To get put on my wife's insurance, my condition would be "pre-existing" and therefore not covered. So in 5 days, I no longer have insurance of any kind. Zomig nasal is $26 a pop x 30 = $780 per month just for that, not counting all the other crap I take. Needless to say, I went out today and got a month's supply of EVERYTHING I. 30 Zomigs for $35. That will carry me through the next month until I can hopefully find another job. Giovanni, how in the hell can you afford $562 a month for insurance? Wait, I have a better question, are ya'll hiring? Gator Start pout-whine sequence now

| By law, drug companies can hold a drug patent for 17 years before the generic can be sold. Plus drug companies will pay hundreds of thousands to millions of $ to a generic drug maker to hold off production for another year, so the greedy drug makers can get more profit (minus the payout to the gen drug co.). Also, drug companies can sell the drug under the brand name just by changing a small detail of how the drug works. Remember when Prosac was the hot anti-depressant? When the patent ran out, the company immediately released a version of Prosac that was long acting, qualifying to be sold under the brand name, thereby still making a fortune off of it. Of course that was heavily advertised, so people think they have to have it. The same thing happened with Imitrex. There is now a faster acting version of it, so that version will continue to be sold under the brand name. Drug companies get their drugs patented while still in R&D so no one can steal the formula. I believe Imitrex has been on the market since 1993. I want to see the generic too. Since we live in a society of free trade, the drug co.'s can charge whatever they want. Here in Illinois, the governor has approved buying drugs (for the state employees medical plan) from Canada, because our neighbors to the north put a cap on what drug companies can charge. And I'm sure drug co.'s are giving doctors plenty of incentives ($) to prescribe the brand names Something has got to give. I am lucky to have insurance. Still drugs are expensive. Can't afford to buy any drug company stock though. purpleydog

..don't get me started on drug company ...scum. ...just the other day heard a NPR broadcast (public radio: those lousy cominist bastidges....) about an AIDS drug. When it first came out, Abbott Labs --the supplier who was charging *x* dollars for 4 doses/day-- was making an obscene amount of money..... Well, the doctors found out that the drug was SO effective: --only one (1) dose/day had the same effect.... GOOD deal for the gay caballeros and the folks who got a "tainted" transfusion...and the Haitians... and the IV drug addicts.... and the other scum who have contracted this...like Magic Johnson...et al. SO, the pharmaceutical company was losing 3/4 of their profit. SO, in typical entreprenuerial fashion, Abbott Labs QUADRUPLED the price of the drug. How....FREE TRADE.... how CAPITALISTIC ... how "Business As Usual" of them.... If you don't think that the money you spend on the drugs that give you... varied and unreliable and EXPENSIVE results.... are not going to line the pockets of maggots, predators, and uh, *entrepreneurs* ... then you *deserve* to pay those premiums. [rant mode...temporarily....off]

One of my state representatives, Billy Tauzin, announced his retiremant after twelve terms. What? He also announced that he was going to leave early. Many speculate that it was to get an early start on the time required between retirement and being employed as a lobbyist. Guess, in which industry he's slated to start his new career? He is now recovering from some nasty cancer. I can hope that he has some sort of epiphany but I doubt it. Best wishes Billy. Justice is closer than you know. Steve G

Cootie, I have no idea if verapamil will work for Brad or not but I just thought I would mention it because it is a high blood pressure medication [besides being a CH med]. Just thinking out loud here. Hey Brad.

My "drug company" prices went up too, so I went to the other street corner and saw his opposition!!! lol Seriously though, If only the real drug companies had such high standards as those on the street, prices would be reasonable, tomuch opposition to raise prices. Thats the other real issue with CH, you have to deal with the crippling physical pain, along with the financial pain, while the physical pain makes it harder to earn the financial. Turts

Oh my God! I had no idea! You pay $500-$600 dollars a MONTH for health insurance. How the hell do you afford that? What % is that of an average person's income over there? Excuse my naivety, but what do you do when you don't have or can't afford insurance? Do you get anything other than basic treatment? Wendy

| That kind of money is a large portion of income, apartments rent for that. If you can't afford to go to the doctor, or hospital, you either don't go, because there is no money, or you go to the hospital, where they are either a "charitable institution", and you pay a small amount, or you rack up bills at another one and they sue you for the $ and you file bankruptcy. A lot of people can't afford insurance, or else they don't have any at all. Our medical system, or rather the lack of, really sucks. purpleydog

My husband gets $6.00 per hour taken out of his check for insurance. This covers just the two of us, we have no children. We do have fairly good insurance, but at the same time they are raising costs, they are cutting benefits and coverage. If I wasn't on his insurance I wouldn't be able to get coverage either. purpleydog

| Tell us about it Wendy. I pay just about $3,000 a year or about $250 a month for health insurance. It's good stuff but soon it will be out of my range. I do get a substantial amount of that back in that it pays for my ridiculously priced anti-convulsants and a couple other drugs. They would cost about half that amount. No we can't afford it. Here in New York State, if you are poor and have kids, you can get decent health care from one or two State agencies. One has to work at it though. It takes some doing and the problem is that so many of those who really need it don't have the resources to do so. I'll give New York credit in that so far as I know, no one with a severe or life threatening problem is turned away. Unless you find financial help, you are responsible for the bills after the fact, however. Probably the best health system in the world is New York State Medicaid, which is what you get if you can prove a lack of ability to earn. The recipient pays zero and you have access to everything. It's expensive as hell for the State but it works. National health is sorely needed. Shame on our Congressmen and retired Congressmen who have free health care for the rest of their lives. Charlie
