Got CH comfort food?

Hi guys! I was just wondering if you have some food and/or drink that helps you deal with the CH pain when you wait the abortatives to work? I used to get comfort from drinking a can of ice-cold coke diet with lemon, but gave it up because I wanted to see if it had something to do with CH pain. Well, it didn't, but I still don't drink it. Anyways, PFdays to everyone! I'm going to enjoy these last days here in London before returning Finland at the end of this month... sandie99

For me it ain't food or drink as such, but I always have a large bag of frozen pees waiting in the freezer. When my head starts to ramp up, out come the pees and straight on the head. During the peak of my cycle, i will tape the bag to my noggen so I have the use of both my arms to thrash about. For me the cold has a mild releiving effect, maybe like your "ice cold diet coke with lemon". Drinking Diet coke must look a whole lot better than rolling around with frozen pees taped to your head. I don't take any meds, my personal choice, so anything that can take the edge off the pain is a bonus, even if I look like the village idiot. Wishing PF days your way from down under. Steve

Aussie, No meds? That's brave! I don't have any meds either, but daily CHs and it sure is hellish. I stopped taking topamax week ago, but since my GP is not sure how long I will have to wait before I can take painkillers (like maxalt which helps) I don't have any. Nest time I meet my neuro I'll ask for oxygen. I have tried ice and ice cream (which did help few times) though. And star-shaped drink-coolers, which did help for a while. Pack of peas... Hmm, I could try that one. Best wishes & PFdays, sandie99

Sorry Sandie. I don't have a "comfort food." I think my HEAD is comfort food to the beast. He seems to be snacking more often on it. Hard to eat with an O2 mask on and Zomig Nasal costs too much to use it until I am sure that a particular attack will be strong enough to justify using it. If the pain gets to the point that I'm using an abortive, that last thing on my mind is food. I'll have to try Aussie's suggestion. A bag of peas would conform to my head better than the bags large cubed ice I have tried. Gator

I love the frozen peas...and ya know what else helps me? I also keep about 2 lb of flour in a plastic bag in the freezer too....feels like heaven on the face and eyes during an attack. Try it sometime...really..I mean really feels good..I feel even better than peas!!! Luke

I find that when I'm having a cluster headache, I enjoy chewing on tin foil, ground bits of glass, and munching on rusty nails. Mmmmm.... Tasty! And it always feels better than the cluster headaches.

Marlboro Light's (No...I don't eat them.) and ice water as cold as I can get it. Slam it real quick and you get that ice cream head ache kind of feeling. It's a good distraction from the CH.

Prior to surgery on my throat I used to slam down ice water as quickly as I could. Unfortunatly now, when I do that - it all comes out my nose. Not a pretty sight.

Food during a beast attack??? You've gotta be kidding. I've tried ice water and hot cofee. The water helps but the coffee really gets the beast pissed. Can't smoke either but when it starts ramping down I've gotta have that smoke. Kip

during? Nothing but cold water....after...yep I light up a smoke and if it's at night...more cold water...daytime is coffee or Dt. Pepsi... I've made home made slushy ice packs too. the zip lock sandwich bags work well, and the mix is 1/2 cup vodka and 1/2 cup water, squeeze out as much air as you can then reinforce all seams with duct tape. Perfectly conforms and will hold the cold longer than the flour will.

| Swap the water for OJ and when the headache is gone you have something like one of those kids drinks. Just punch in a straw! Gator I'd use one of those gallon sized ziploc bags

| Just keep the ratio the same and you got yourself a great ice pack hun....I have 4 packs in the freezer now....that way I can switch them out if needed, and the smaller size is good for me...

I'm with Kip. Eat DURING an attack? It's all I can do to stay a human being rather than a howling wolf, so I could never contemplate eating and find it hard to imagine how anyone would. For the cooling thing, I have found anything from the freezer melts too quickly but if you use one of the white wine chiller sleeves you keep in the freezer, they will freeze a flannel or piece of towelling over and over again for a long time, and are reusable for years. Works for me also as you can mold the frozen fabric around whichever bit of the face or head you want. I stick it in my eye, which probably isn't sensible, but it helps me. Wendy

When I'm taking a hit, no food, no drink, just gimme a large freezer bag with ice and water......and hope the demon gets cold and hauls ass. Sometimes he does, sometimes it just pisses him off..... Afterwards.......ice tea and a smoke. And lots of unanswered questions like "What the f*(* have I done to deserve this? 'Cause if someone would tell me, I swear I'll never do it again. Bill

At work I have bags int he freezer. Everyone here knows that if they see me grabbing one of those then to stay away. At home I have a thing that you can either microwave for heat or freeze it for cold and it is moldable. I use it cold and wrap it around my head. Have to take a look for one of those wine bottle things Wendy. Food, hell know during an attack I cant eat, I could never keep it down. But I could easily see people smoking. Afterwards I am usually pretty shaky and just want fluids. Dont care what just cold and lots of it. (Cant be diet as Nurtasweet will give me a migraine - wouldn't that suck triggering a migraine after a CH ) -Tia
