Hello crew, I got to ask were is it. Some time ago I ran across a post on how to describe a cluster headache to those that know nothing about them. I found Dave E. Version though I recall an excellent version that got to the specifics on pain we suffer. I could sure use your help on this as I have got a important meeting tomorrow. Rt now I'm still in cycle so I got to ask for a good specific pre written one I can run off. Your help would be appreciated. Thanks Mr. YL who can't put all the words together right now.

Hi, I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but check it out... http://clusterheadaches.org/ click on the gray menu bar, where it says O.U.C.H. then click on "Colleagues Letter". That should be a great start, just save and print. Good Luck! Pep

This is a copy and paste not my own words. The Ball Peen Hammer « on: Sep 17th, 2003, 9:48am » Quote Modify ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------- One of the difficulties we face as sufferes is trying to explain what CH is like. The word headache seems to sap the understanding of what it really is. My husband, a non-sufferer, was in an office with a rather out-of-touch, arrogant pain management Doctor once, and he was able to place the intensity of the pain into perspective in practical, everyday language that got immediate understanding, and results. I was floored by how much my husband had observed, and was able to relate. "THE BALL PEEN HAMMER" analogy. Imagine what it would be like if some big guy were to hit you with a hammer, hard. For the sake of argument, it doesn't even have to be your head, you can pick the body part where you want to be struck (your thumb, or knee). Not hard enough to break, just very, very, hard. Now, you have just been hit with that hammer. Using your choice of pain management skills, don't scream, don't writhe, just go to a happy place! Tell yourself that you can handle the pain. Now, you can't take any pain medicine for it , because you might have to worry about addiction, and that would be bad, wouldn't it? Now about an hour later, your eyes have finally quit streaming, the snot dries up in your nose, and the pain starts to dwindle to only a significant throb, and you think you might live through this experience. But now, the big dude is going to walk out of the corner and smack you in the same place yet again. Meanwhile, try to keep working, taking care of the kids, doing laundry. You will get hit with this hammer up to six, eight times a day in the same place. This guy will be your constant companion, all day and all night, for weeks, months, years even. Sometimes you will see the dude coming, sometimes he will just hit you from behind. Either way, it will happen in public, in front of your loved ones, co-workers. Now, try not to be depressed! Try massage if things REALLY get bad. Now, you have lived with this hammer for a month or so...(question to Doc) how far would you go to make him quit hitting you? When would enough be enough? One month, One year? How about six years? If this were a wife, son or daughter, would you sit by and watch them go through it, offering moral support when you could, or would you ask some hard questions about why people have to COPE with pain rather than TREAT it? I hope this helps you as it helped me. « Last Edit: Sep 17th, 2003, 10:00am by hdbngr »

These are good descriptions, though a little tough for the average non informed person to understand. I know it's out their some place on ch.com. It is going to be used in a statement to get my point across to some people that know nothing about the pain we suffer and know nothing of the medical terminology which we use. Once again at a loss for words. All help is appreciated .Mr.YL

Mr YL it is a syndrome in which the pain is so intense, so exquisite, so utterly consuming that 15 min. seems like 15 hours. For some other stories of the descriptions of pain you can check here: http://members.cox.net/clind/clusterstories.html Cat

Quote:"THE BALL PEEN HAMMER" analogy. Imagine what it would be like if some big guy were to hit you with a hammer, hard. |
| I have mentioned on this board and used the ballpeen hammer whack to the temple explaination to my brother and he winced. It was understandable to him, and he could identify with that type of pain. Not all people can identify with the same explaination. Each person needs a description which they can identify with. I find that explaination appropropriate though for my understanding. Some can't imagine that experience, I can and it is fitting to me. It may seem to inhumane for imagination and some may not believe it. Believe me, it has been fitting though. Kevin M

It is not the descriptions on the main www.clusterheadaches.com website? Here is one... "It’s somewhere between 11:00 P.M. and 3:00 A.M., and I wake terrified, hopeful that I’m dreaming, and knowing that I’m not. I move quickly out of bed while my lovely wife of fifteen years, the only one who truly tries to understand, watches helpless; as there is nothing that she can do, she hurts too. I am careful not to wake the children as I make my way down the stairs. If they were to witness my nightly cluster ritual, they would never see me the same way again. Their father, fearless protector, diligent provider, crawling about in tears, beating his head on the hard wood floor. The pain is so intense I want to scream, but I never do. I go down three flights of stairs where I can't be heard, and drop to my knees. I place my hands on the back of my neck, and lock my fingers together. I bind my head between my arms and squeeze as hard as I can in an attempt to crush my scull. I begin to roll around, banging my head on the floor, silently groaning. I stand up and begin to pace, pressing my left eye with full force of my palm. I often wonder how it is that my eye isn't damaged. I search for the telephone that has always been my weapon of choice for creating a diversion, and I beat my left temple with the hand piece. I create a rhythm as I strike my scull, cursing the demon with each blow. I reach a point of distraction from the cluster, and then I start the whole process over; roll and squeeze, crawl and bang, find the telephone. Eventually, the cluster, whatever it is, drains from me. I can feel it passing through my temple, and behind my ear where it seems to run out of my skull like water passing down a pipe. Tonight it took two hours, yesterday was thirty minutes. Tomorrow only God knows."

Sometimes reading a simple story will stick in your mind easy enough and you don't have to memorize anything. Can also make it easy to talk to others on common grounds and understanding. 'minds me of a story ... yeah ... wanna hear it? ... yeah ... goes a little somethin' like dis: After George finished work on the construction site, he headed, as usual, to his favorite local tavern. Sitting at the bar, he drank a couple of whiskies, smoked a few cigarettes and joked with his buddies. George was a "man's man," down to earth, tough, decent. A tall, rugged fellow with blue eyes and thick blond hair, he was also popular with the ladies. Through a haze of smoke and laughter, George became aware of an uncomfortable feeling of pressure in his left ear, similar to the feeling one experiences when an airplane descends. Then he felt a piercing pain around his left eye. The searing agony quickly spread, enveloping the left side of his forehead. Soon George was overcome with excruciating pain. It felt as if the left side of his face was being stabbed over and over again with an icepick. His left eyelid drooped and his nose ran. George stumbled out to his car, where he endured the rest of the attack, fighting a strong urge to drive his car into a brick wall and end his misery. Half an hour later, a time period that seemed like an eternity to George, the stabbing sensations began to lessen in frequency and finally subsided altogether. But the relief was only partial, since George knew that he would probably have another attack that night, or the next day. He went back and met with his friends, but found it almost impossible to tell them what these attacks were like. Simple, yes ... but easy for others to follow just enough to get an idea about CH, and then leads to questions which are easier to answer than starting from scratch. Just another thought, best of luck! Dave

This link isn't as much a description as it is the best we have to explain to others that this horror has nothing to do with what others think of when they hear "headache." It's well worth the look: http://www.ouch-uk.org/ch/note_colleagues.cfm Here is my technique: http://www.netsync.net/~charlies/ Hope these help. Charlie
