I do not know if this is done statewide or countywide but tonight/tomorrow is the "Walk for Life" for the American Cancer Society. Thousands of people will be staying up all night and someone from each family/team will always be on the track 24/7 walking for a loved one who has died of cancer. Tonight I will be walking for my Grandpa, the only man I ever knew that did not betray me in some form or fashion. I lost my Grandpa 2 years ago to brain cancer and tonight I will walk with him each step around the track, along with 37 other grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his children and his wife, (my wonderful Grandmother of 91). If this walk is not done tonight nationally, please, take a step tonight and remember those you've lost to cancer. I'm not asking for donations, just thoughts of your loved ones lost to this disease. Tonight I walk with Grandpa, once again Renee

Hi Renee..I have been involved in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life for several years now. It is a wonderful, emotional and uplifiting experience. Manypeople ask why this event lasts so long..walk a sports track at a local school....camp out on the field, and we do it all in relay teams... it is a 24-hr event..and for a good reason... Cancer never sleeps..... Ours will be in July, and, once again, I will walk in memory of my father...and in celebration of my mom..who walks as a SURVIVOR!!!! 21 yrs ago, she, too, was a cancer patient... Renee..I am sorry you have lost your Grandfather. If you can, please, celebrate his life, his love and his gifts, and know, the 2 of you are walking side by side.... Cathi

We have the same thing in Ontario - it's done in June and we do this in memory of our 3 year old grandson. We lost him to medulla blastoma 3 years ago. It's done on the grounds of a large highschool and the track is taken completely over. They have candles all around the track and people just kind of set up camp in the centre. They have a survivors segment to it as well. It's very impressive after dark when you see this track completely surrounded by candles. Renee, your grandpa will always be with you and it will show in all the ways you choose to honour his memory. Hugs to you and all of those who walk in memory of a loved one.

I've walked, and will walk again. It truly is a wonderful way to cherish and remember those you have loved and lost, and to raise money for those you know currently fighting. I got the tee shirts and wear them proudly !

Thank you all for your support! The walk went very well. My feet and back are not very well but the walk was very special. There were 167 survivors in our survivor walk. I was so humbled to meet them and see their strength. The midnight pizza was great but the circle of candles around the track and the word "HOPE" spelled out in the bleachers in candles was very moving. I so enjoyed the time walking for and with my Grandpa. Get this, my Grandma (91 yrs old) hung from 7 pm until 2 am with us. Grandpa's Windchimers team walked all night and collected $1420.00 in his name. I walked for Christopher as well and for all those lost to cancer. If you've never joined in the "walk for life", it is a very gratifying experience and very healing. Grandpa's lil' angel Renee

YES! YES, Renee!!! Join your local Relay for Life....for Dan's dad, Renee's grampa, Christopher, my dad....and MOST of all, for the HOPE that all the survivors give us for a cure for Cancer!! At our local relay, at midnight, a bagpiper walks with us, playing Amazing Grace. The candles are lit, things are quiet, and the bagpipe cries out in the dark. I will never be immune to the sound and the sight at that particular point. To Dan, Renee...to all who have lost someone they love to cancer, my heartfelt sympathy, and fervent hopes that soon, no one will lose a loved one to this insidious disease. (you guys, rest your feet tonight, and drink a lot of water- you have earned a break) Cathi
