Sad news overseas (not CH)

If you watch the news, you've probably already heard about the death of Nicholas Berg, an American Civilian who was over in Iraq. He is from my hometown, and one of my mom's best friends at work was like a mother to him when he was growing up. This is a very sad story.

Reading about this story does not seem real. That something this macaube could really happen.

I can not even imagine what this poor kid's parents are going through. I have two sons 25 & 27 and the thought of what that poor boy (man) went through and his family-it's beyond comprehension. I saw it all over the news tonight and I was numb. What a freakin' mess we got into over there and I have no idea what the answers are. I pray for the soldiers every day- and for some sort of resolution to this nightmare.

I saw the story on Yahoo...still don't believe this is all happening. My stomach is sick...I don't feel good now. When I read it earlier today...wasn't sure...but I believe(and maybe I shouldn't always believe the media) when I saw it on the news this evening,,it's true! This is a sickness that must be stopped totally...because if it's not...much more will follow. My prayers to this brave Man and his Family. May the Lord keep in him Peace...Cleanse him...and take him to his side.

This is terrible. I want to know where is the moral outrage? People were so concerned that these murderers of Americans were only humiliated, yet the media portays this murder with cool detachment even going so far as to appear to blame America for it. These are the people that we are fighting in Iraq. I call them people, but the truth is their lack of respect for human life puts them somewhere below animals.
I'm not saying those who mistreated the Iraqi prisoners shouldn't be punished. They should be and we were already working on that when some Islamic Terrorist sympthizing bastard traitor leaked the pictures to the media. And the media in their rush for ratings broadcasts that crap sometimes without even verifying the info or asking themelves if they should. As far as I'm concerned, those people who sell secrets and leak information should suffer a particularly harsh death. At least as harsh as the death the people suffer who are killed because of the leak. This country needs to re-discover the meaning of the word "Traitor."
Sorry to rant, but this shit pisses me off!

I downloaded the video and it's fucking hideous. These are some brutal mf'ers we're dealing with but I guess we already knew that after 9/11.
Yes this is a tragedy and I'm sorry for the family but civilians going into that part of the world should know the risk involved. Sure there's a lot of money to made in Iraq right now but is it worth it?

Well I don't think he was going over for the money. Not sure how much the national news said about him because all the news reports are blending together at this point. A few years ago he went to Africa, and he came back with just the clothes on his back because he gave away everything he had. He is just that kind of person. His family has said repeatedly that he went because he wanted to help.
My mom met him awhile back because he came to her school to help teach kids about squids in her friend's class.
Somehow..to me he seemed like a great person..not someone out to make a buck.

OK I went back and read a little about Nick Berg and maybe he was over there working for righteous reasons. But I would imagine most civilian contractors over there are like the ex-hostage Thomas Hamill and they are there for the incredible money being offered.
The bottom line is they are entering at their own risk and the bad guys ain't hardly bullshittin'

Yeah it is true you enter at your own risk. I reminded my mom today that I have wanted to go to Africa with Doctors Without Borders since I was in junior high maybe. Even after all the things I hear coming out of there, I still want to go. I guess sometimes our convictions overcome that fear. Don't know if I will ever go to Africa, but God bless him for going there and Iraq and for attempting to bring some good...
Never easy choices, I guess.

Probably more my frame of mind right now than your post. Background stuff pressing in heavy on my head today. That coupled with a couple of direct attacks by the beast has me on edge. Don't really mean to attack anyone.
It just seems the American television news channels of today are quicker on the story if it is anti-American. And you are right - the scumbags that are committing these heinous murders are the bad guys. I wish more people could focus on that than constantly bashing America every time someone in a third world country gets a runny nose. It gets old and if they hate America that bad, then they should get the hell out. Go to one of those poor countries they are so fond of and bash that countries government and see how long they live.
I'm sure this is all far removed from the reason Lizzie posted the story in the first place. It is a tragedy that the young man was killed. Regardless of whether he was there to make money or not, he was a civilian there helping rebuild their country and the bastards killed him for no other reason than he was American. I do feel sorry for his family and friends that knew him and loved him and I send out a prayer for them to be comforted in this dark hour.

We are at war. And, like other wars, the propaganda machine chugs along. If I learned anything by this, it's that the individuals responsible remain true to their word. I do not believe for one instant that the murder was for revenge for the acts of a few American soldiers (there goes that propaganda machine again). Show the Americans how THEIR actions have caused this. BUNK, BUNK, BUNK!!!!!!! This latest grotesque display should only show us all the more what we are dealing with and have been dealing with from the beginning. They despise us and have despised us for a lawwwwng time.
Our young men and women are over there in harms way 24/7. They are fighting against people who want them off the face of the earth. I don't know why the "media" views this as "non-news" 
Prayers going up for each and every soldier fighting terrorism for our future.

I feel awful that his family saw the whole thing. This will probably torment them for the rest of their lives.

I haven't seen the whole video of what happened to Nicholas Berg. It is horrible nonetheless. To behead someone and to say "God is Great" while doing it is unfathomable in my mind. I also understand he was also Jewish. I also happened to go online and unfortunately put in "Iraqi Pictures" as a search vehicle and I happened to see the pictures of Iraqi civilians injured during my governments operation free iraq bombing campaign. Children with no feet, arms burnt beyond description. I thought nothing could shock me, those photos did. Everyone feels strongly in their own way about what is happening. I haven't fully decided what to feel or what to believe. I am not there, others are and I wish they weren't. I am scared for a civilian friend in Saudi Arabia right now who I wish was home. I won't share my personal beliefs about our current administration here so as not to offend some. I just pray for a swift resolution to it all if that is possible and for the return of our young men and women over there, whether they should be or not.

The decapitation (of Nick Berg) recalled the kidnapping and videotaped beheading of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl in 2002 in Pakistan. Four Islamic militants have been convicted of kidnapping Pearl, but seven suspects — including those who allegedly slit his throat — remain at large.
