Thankfully, it was 30 miles from our house. A little place called Waurika, OK. It's a little, bitty one, but isn't it pretty??

| Yeah, Mel, in Oklahoma, that thing barely qualifies as a twister. 30 miles is forever away unless it is tracking right towards you. Where I wouldn't want to live is in Moore and Oklahoma City. The month of May is cause for some SERIOUS rattled nerves there. In Oklahoma, we average about 52 tornadoes a year. In 1999 we had 148. On 1 day, May 3 1999, there were about 76 tornadoes in Oklahoma. That was the day that the F5 tornado hit the OKC Metro area. It was on the ground for 4 hours and left a path of destruction 38 miles long with record winds of 318mph. They were seriously considering revamping the tornado scale after that one to add a higher level than F5. OKC and Moore were hit again on May 8, 2003 and a third time on May 9, 2003. Last year we had 78. Gator Gets a little windy here in the spring!!!

| Flying monkeys is Kansas. Toilet paper? What's a toilet? Oh, you mean outhouse! Heck, we got corn cobs for that. Tornadoes are too cool to watch as long as they are in unpopulated areas. It's when they get close to people and property that they get scary. Gator Hell yeah, I've got a storm celler.

Hey Lee, you beat me to it. I was going to post a picture from that link.... . I rode that one out from 10 miles away, but my husband was right in the middle of it, hiding under an overpass. All he had left was the clothes he was wearing. That tornado was a mile wide at the base, stayed on the ground for around 1 1/2 hrs (47 miles). It killed 45 people. It was an ugly one.

| Man, he's lucky. Contrary to popular belief an overpass is a dangerous place to try to ride out a tornado. I've heard stories of people being sucked out or having debris slammed up into them.

I donated blood after the 79 twister in Wichita Falls. Unfortunately, it was MY house, or what was left of it, that made The Weather Channel on Mother's Day 1998. Was a pier and beam house and picked that house up right off it's piers, after a 100+ year old hackberry tree came crashing thru the ceiling. I was in the closet. NOW...I got me a twister shelter in the ground and a brick barn for the ponies. Had 1 hit my house when I was a young 'un too. The garage roof was found 1.5 miles down the road in another pasture. Awww..Texas weather! Ain't it great!

Very awesome-tornadoes fascinate me but I am happy to keep my distance. We get a few renegade tornadoes out here, but we have our own weather issues! Why do they always seem to hit a trailer park??
