I used to use this technique and it is very effective.
However, nothing has matched the effectiveness of PAYING for my privacy. I pay PacSmell (SBC) for privacy guard. Among other things, it blocks any call that doesn't have caller ID. I know it's a pain for some people some times, but screw em. If they can't hang up, dial *82 and then my number (to cancel caller-id blocking to make their number show up) then I guess they don't wanna talk all that bad now do they?
Ever since I signed up for privacy guard, I've not had 1 telemarketing call. Not one.

Nah, I love those calls......before they can start the pitch I go into how I am pleasuring myself. Depends on if its a guy or a chick, guys hang up right away....LMMFAO

When I used to have fun driving them crazy, I'd instantly ask them to hold. After about a minute, if they were still there I'd get on the line real fast and say "Really, I'll just be another second...". Big prizes to the ones who held the longest.
Another thing I used to do was let them continue with their silly pitch, but continually interrupt and ask for the current time.
I used to also ask for number to call them back since this was the only way I could be positive who I was talking to. This almost never is possible, but the ones who fall for that never get a call, and will call me back 2-3 times asking if I'm having a problem dialing, and I say I'm calling but it just rings and rings. I can see steam coming from their ears.
I have also gone into the bathroom so I could (loudly) take a piss while they're pitching their crap products or services. A well timed flush adds to the effect.
Remember, the more time you can waste (of theirs) the more damage you have done.

I signed up for both the federal and Oklahoma do not call lists. The few dumbshits that have called since were reminded of the $10,000.00 fine per violation and agreed to remove my (unlisted) number from their system. For the last six months or so I haven't had any problems from anyone but credit card companies, but if you have an account with them they are legal. I fully expect the political calls to start soon, they are exempt also.

I am on the Oklahoma and Federal do not call lists and I don't get as many.
They can be annoying, but I used to love to screw with them. If I had time, I would act all interested and ask them all kinds of questions and get their hopes up and then say I'm not interested. I had one guy on the phone for 15 minutes explaining his product and the extras and the pros and cons of his product versus someone elses. It was fun.
I remember once I handed the phone to my son who was about 3. He talked the guys ear off for a few minutes and when I picked the phone back up to hang it up the guy was still on the line and said, "So I take it you're not interested?" DUH!!!

I asked another woman once, if as a little girl, she wanted to annoy people for a living when she grew up. She started crying and hung up.
Another woman said, "Well, I like working with people." I replied that ANNOYING people was not the same as working WITH people. She wanted to be a smart-ass and said, "I'm just making a living." I told her that flipping burgers, cleaning hotel rooms, and being a waitress were all perfectly acceptable, non-annoying ways to make a living. She hung up.
I have other ways of messing with them, but these are a few of my personal favorites.

I ask the telemarket caller if they know why cow crap is flat and rippled and why rabbit crap is small and round. When they don't answer I tell them that until they know there shit they are not to call me again. They usually hang up.
