Coffee? Yeecch I prefer my caffeine in a diet coke from the fountain, not a can. Crave it with my migraines, not sure it helps with my CH. Cinnamon tea (hot) seems to dull my pain somewhat. purpleyd

As with everything else, it depends on the person. I've heard it both ways. Some of the meds my gp experimented on me with had caffeine in them. On the other hand my latest neuro seems concerned with the amount of caffeine I take in. Basically, it's just whatever works for you I guess. I'm sure my more learned and experienced family members here will have more and better information. Gator

I pop a store-brand Vivarin (or half of one) and perhaps 10mg of Baclofen... numbs the shadow right up. Ro<k

Personally I try never to drink coffee unless I am awake. Being chronic I am in cycle all the time, but thereare times it seems I am in a double cycle and I go through 2-3 pots a day. It doesn;t stop them, but it does tend to mute them a bit if I can get to it quickly enough at thebeginnings of an attack. Doesn't even keep me awake anymore, but it does wake me up! Bottms up, jc

I probably drink two pots of coffee a day. I have for 40 years. I have been pain free for 13. My CH began to dissipate in 1990 and ended in 1991. About that time I began to drink very strong coffee as I was finally in charge of making the stuff. It's probably a coincidence however. Coffee for me is a fuel additive. I don't recommend gallons of coffee but if it has affected my CH, it has been positive. Good luck. Charlie

I read about coffee being an abbortive in a post here. I have tried it since. It seems to work for shadows, I havent tried it for a serious mid- night hit, as at 2am in pain- coffee is the furthest thing from my mind, but during the day, yeah STRONG HOT coffee I usually start smoking for a while while in cycle too. Nothing goes hand in hand like coffee and nicotine Turts

It (for me) doesnt do much during a full blown attack but does seem to knock out a shadow. But once a full blown attack is over...I cant get to the coffee pot fast enough..it's like I NEED IT! Whatever works for you Good Luck Huggs Shari

Caffeine in coffee is a vaso-constrictor which is what we want to happen when we have a CH. It is also why it is in some of the meds we are given. An example is Caffergot. I put the pot on at the 1st twinge I get, while I'm wrangling with the Trex and the 02 bottle. I put a few ice cubes in it so I can drink it fast. It helps a great deal. Linda

The Cafergot worked for me if I took two cafergot at once but then came the heart palpitations from the caffeine. One cafergot didn't help so I just stay away.

Cinammon contains ingredients that are related to hot pepper (capsaicin) and ginger (gingerol, shogaol). All of these act on the nerves that release substance P, which is out of whack in cluster headache. Long term use of these is more likely to be beneficial than the first cup.

Caffeine and I have become enemies over the past year. It makes me very anxious so there is basically no caffeine at all in my diet. Previously, I had been getting alot of it (mostly through soda). It didn't really do anything for me. I foudn that the more useful purpose for the cold can of Pepsi was to hold it up to my throbbing eye. Good luck Ed
