Something new I read about ch....

I went to my family doctor on Tuesday because she said that she would help with my head if I ever needed it.  We spent about an hour talking about clusters, and her nurse copied some pages out of a medical book.  The cluster information was written by Dr. Roger Cady (the same Dr. Cady that the Advocacy team is dealing with), and it contained a couple of statements that I had never heard or read about clusters.

1.  Tobacco products may slow responsiveness to medications.

2.  Narcotics may expedite transformation of episodic cluster to chronic cluster.

Anyone else ever heard this?

1. dont think this applys to me as I stopped smoking 6 years before my first one

2. That would suck considering I use narcotics regularly since Nov 2000 when my back was injured. Stopped them for 10 months while I was preg and was back on then for 9 months when my fist cluster hit.  So would this mean that I skipped being eposodic and went straight to chronic???

Actually I did know that Tobacco can affect the effectiveness of some medications....but I ain't no pharmacist so I knew nothing about its effect on any CH meds.

The latter statement, I knew nothing about period, but I've been taking xanax (narcotic) for a couple of years now to treat severe anxiety and so far I'm still Episodic.

Take what you want from that.

The use of the word ”may” here seems vague and non-definitive. A better choice of words or quoting some study with actual measurements would be more meaningful. My Doc. blames just about every known medical condition on tobacco, alcohol, or the abuse of drugs. I guess it’s too late for me. I have done all three.

The medical community takes every chance they can to tell folks to stop using tobacco.

The 2nd point about the narcotics and moving from episodic to chronic sounds similar to something else.  Most people with "transformed migraine" got that way because they had episodic migraine, but they rebounded off of either abortives or pain meds to the point where their migraines became continuous.  It doesn't just have to be narcotics, though.  Doctors don't all share the same opinion of rebound, but the pain killers are a #1 way to move from an episodic headache condition to a chronic one!
