I have gone 15 days PF, I think because of Topamax. Can I go out and get me a stiffy (I mean a drink, not some perversive idea)? I mean I will have my Imitrex shot on hand. I think I am going to go for it. This will be my official, "am I out of my episodic CH cycle test?" Sorry for the chronics. Do any of you chronics just say fuck it and drink anyways? I am a Friday night lounge-lizard drinker. -Scott

I don't seem to be plagued with the alcohol trigger at all....I will have a glass of wine with dinner or something and the occasional beer...in fact the night I had more than just A beer the monster took a two hour deture before hitting....so I don't know. Maybe a fluke?

I just distinctly remember me sitting there at a wedding reception in '99 having a few cocktails and the people introducing the bride and groom, and I was sitting at a nice round table and an F'en 9 hit me. My eye teared. My nose ran. I was crying too. The pain was at its worst. At this point I hadn't been diagnosed, I was f'en scared out of my gorde. But for sure alcohol triggerred this attack. It had all summer. During this episode (my second), I was getting up to 6/day. It was the summer of me being a guinea pig of medications. Being a 5th year grad student trying to prepare for leaving school and looking for a job, it wasnt a good time. Alcohol was/has always been a trigger. Sure thing, you bet'cha. When in remission, there is no problem in the occasional having a few drinks. My remission is 1.5-3 yrs. Interesting that any cluster heads can drink, but statistics and testimonials say some can. -Scott

Nancy, At clusterhead gatherings, do people drink? Because I would imagine there would be people running to the nearest oxygen tanks. In college I remember a game at the bar called penny to you pee. A group of guys sat at the bar and drank beers for a penny until someone had to pee. So in this clusterheadache game, maybe a group could drink until someone needs oxygen? Seriosuly, if you are chronic, which I imagine a lot clusterheadache convention-goers are, how do you guys do it? (drinking that is) -Scott

Scott. I did the same last July under similar conditions. It came back just like the sneeky bastard that it is. At least your selection seems to be a safe choice. I don't know about it if you're still on meds. Be careful and don't drink any beer till August. Steve G

Hey Steve, I think I'll risk it. I will have to bear 5 min of agony til the Trex kicks in worse-case scenario. I am on Topamax and 4 other medications. I should be careful in any event. Thanks for the advice. -Scott

Scott, Some chronics do drink anyway because they're gonna get hit either way or because alcohol is not a trigger for them. There are episodics who come to the convention who are not in cycle so obviously it won't affect them (except for the occasional nasty hangover ) and I've seen some who do not drink because either it is a trigger for them or they just don't drink to begin with. Anyhow, the convention is WAY more than just drinking while socializing, it is a place where clusterheads can feel like they belong, know that they're not alone in this hell and become more educated in their condition and what is being/or will be done to help them. mel

Mel, Jonny once said it me, "have you ever met another clusterheadache sufferrer?" No, not that I was aware of. I wish like a small group could convene in cities like NYC or Boston (I live in CT). I really can't attend this convention in Nashville. I have seen some postings about small gatherings, and if someone ever is going to try to get one going in any northeast cities, please let me know. I now have a real deep desire to hang out with cluster heads. Not just write messages. I would like to meet some of you and just chat a bit. -Scott

Scott, I feel your pain I'm chronic and get flare-ups at different times of the year when I can't drink beer I'm not a liquor person (except for gin&tonics or vodka/tonics), but sometimes need alcohol to unwind. I found that tequila is the only drink that I can get down without an immediate stab to the skull during those CH flareups. Tried vodka, gin, moonshine, brandy, wine, burbon, etc. Tequila (or other agave derivatives) was the only one I could down. MarkV

That's intriguing. Do other cluster heads have certain types of alcoholic beverages that are or aren't triggers? -Scott

Have at it Scott. You have the Trex. One way to find out. The 24th is my day. Hard afternoon of hockey, followed by an evening with a massive Hold'Em Poker/Hockey Playoff party. Having a buddy pick me up, so I will be doing my best to wear out a mug. Liver has had three months of R&R, Rock

When Brad's last cycle hit he 'swore' it was sinus or stress.....didn't wanna believe anuther cycle was on it's way. He found out 'the hard way' tho many nites in a row that comein home from work and chillin with a few beers was gonna keep his head cool. He'd have a few beers and go to bed and WHAM0-BAMO I could here the pitter patter of his fist in the pillow and increaseingly whimperings begin. Beer's the only booze he drinks cuz he gets too mean with the stiffy stuff (it's the hillbilly in him) Yer gonna miss an aweful good time not makein Nashville....it's a big ass social learning and bonding party ya don't have to drink at ta have fun........Save yer beer tabs fer jonny Pam

Rock, Cool man. Not a heavy drinker. Just that Friday night, "Hey baby...what's yer sign?" business. I am going to have a drink with no reservations, because if I pass, I know I am out of the cycle. if I fail, my "so what is your sign baby?" turns into, a "Oh My God in heaven no, please don't make me go to the bathroom to inject me, make me feel like one of Rockies victims, etc." Usually, even a single CH just knocks me out. I am done. I can't go back to partying, even if after 5-10 min, the CH is aborted. I feel exhausted, but strangely euphoric. I think this has been discussed here. I think the pain is so intense that the body produces as much pain endorphins possible that by the end of the CH, you have a sort of buzz (non-alcohol or drug) induced. Do any of you guys/gals get this? -Scott

Come Friday, I am going to get Shit-faced. Enough of this, "I can't drink cuz of the CH BS" It'll be me, a bottle of Stolleys, some Sushi, and my 'Trex (hopefully some nice drunk happy hour leftovers). That is what my life is. I go to this nice oyster bar at 9:00 PM to listen to jazz and sit at the bar and end up conversing with these really loud obnoxious drunken married ladies who have been there since their lunch breaks. Hehe. I am crazy. -Scott
