Important to all who have children in thier lives

I live in Henderson (a suburb of Las Vegas, Nevada). In reality it is a very quiet neighborhood. The High School is across the street and you can hear the football games during the fall. But yesterday I walked out to get the mail from the group mail box in front of my house and read a note. Below is what it said... Please keep you children safe. I live on **** street (2 streets away from mine) and on Sunday a mid 30's white male offered candy to my 5 year old daughter to get into his car. She ran into the house and told me, but the car drove away before I could get outside to see the license plate. Please watch you children very closely Now my children are never outside without either me or my husband but I can't be with my kids 24/7. They are in day care and my 7 year old goes to 1st grade. No one ever thinks that something like this can happen so close to thier home, when you feel safe and secure. Please talk to the children in your life. Here are a few tips that parents are given from Metro regarding child safety... - If the person picking them up is not someone they know, then they have to know a password. The password should be something that is not easily guessed.
- Do not teach your child to yell "NO", to many children yell no when they are mad at thier parents. Rather have them yell "Stranger", any parents will hear this and pay attention.
- Do not allow your children to open and/or unlock the door without an adult present.
- Teach your children to never state that they are alone or that the adults in the house are preoccupied (i.e. in the shower, etc). Many preditors will try and get this information to see if the child can be easily taken without an adult knowing that
There are many more things that children can do to stay safe. But I wanted to take this time to make sure that everyone helps to keep our smallest treasures safe. PF Wishes -Tia

I have always done this and even now that my kids are mostly grown up (I still have a 15 and 17 y/o in the house), I still touch on the subject ocassionally. Teach the kids know how to handle the situations, but don't go overboard and scare them to death so that they cannot function in society.

Thanks Tiannia. Very good advice. I live just a few blocks from Tianna. Our village is no more dangerous nor safe than any other city in the USA. Please watch the kids. Every Friday and Saturday my grandsons come to stay overnight. There is about a dozen kids on our street, all playing outside all day. It has become a neighborhood routine that there is at least one adult outside with them at all times.

Parents watch your children. I had a very similiar problem last year. We found a note warning of a man trying to pick up children in MY subdivision. He was caught soon after.... "Druckemiller's case turned high profile after the Knox County Sheriff's Office distributed posters in the Halls community bearing his picture and his status as a sex offender. The posting was at the behest of a community park manager who reported to authorities that Druckemiller was hanging around the park and watching children." Guess what happened..... "November 6, 2003 - A man previously convicted of raping a child was cleared by a jury Wednesday of charges he sexually battered a 12-year-old Knox County boy." How could this happen? Jurors were not told that Druckemiller served 12 years in a Pennsylvania prison after being charged in 1987 with 242 counts of child rape. They also were not informed Druckemiller pleaded guilty last year to stalking an 11-year-old Halls boy. Nor did they know Druckemiller told Knox County Sheriff's Office deputies in a statement he could not control his urges to prey on children. Here. 242 counts and he was free! Therefore I am a firm believer that the first shot out of a cold barrel is an effective deterrent to such behavior. The Police cannot protect most of us most of the time. I ought to know, my Dad and his Dad were Cops. In addition my Son ( 8 ) has been taking Kung-Fu for a year and a half now, and he is very good. He works out 5 or 6 days a week for an hour or two. He can do one armed push-ups for goodness sake, at 8! He can stand flat footed and kick me in the chin, and I am 6'2" tall. He begins weapons training this year starting with broadsword. I am very proud and will post some pics soon. We have a network of parents that all exchange phone numbers and watch each others kids...always! Just like when I was a kid. I also have a set of two way radios that my Son takes with him when he goes outside. 50 bucks well spent. I can always contact him, or him I. Watch them like a hawk. Good thread, Mark

I know the feeling. A couple of weeks ago, my kids were sent home with a note telling us that there was a guy in a silver car in our town with a description and all trying to pick up young boys. My son is 14, and I still do not feel safe. It's so true...never say it can't happen to me.... Always better to be safe then sorry and have them hate you now and thank you later for something they can't understand right now until they grow up. Thanks for the info. I am 31, am single and don't have kids. Michael Moore says it best. We are anxious, worried people. It is too bad we have to worry about these things. As a kid, I played freely with my friends in my neighborhood doing fun kid-things. So didn't most of you. Let's hope for a better and safer America. A better and safer World. Let kids be kids. -Scott

Not trying to be sarcastic Scott...but as you said...you dont have kids or grandkids...sometimes we are too overprotective but Our kids are so precious...and this world is not very trustworthy these days..Sometimes this makes it hard to let Kids be kids like the good ole days we knew.. nancyc

Good warning and words Tia I live in a small village in England where you should supposedly feel safe and the worst crime we experience is normally minor vandalism by drunk teenagers in the school holidays when they are bored. This week I noticed a tiny report hidden away in our local paper (readership probably tiny also) that a man living a few hundred yards away had been charged with making indecent images of children. That means he could be innocent, but.......... Part of me thinks it is unfair to print it when he hasn't been convicted, but the Mum part of me wants to throw a brick through his window and drive him away. Wendy

tips Teach your children these things 1.How to grab and pull steering wheel with force in order to cause a wreck. Its better than being kidnaped. 2. If they are ever put in a trunk of a car to pull out every wire they can get their hands on. 3 tell your child if they are ever being chased by a stranger to crawl under a parked car or run in circles around a car screaming "Stranger, Stranger 911" 4 If they are ever picked up by a stranger to kick bit what ever and scream "Stranger Stranger 911" 5.that the best time to get away is right away. 6. If you are holding your child and someone attacks you put your child down and "GO ANIMAL" These safty tips are from a book called Safty Secrets for your children by Chris Harris. Its very good. I got it for Deveny to teach JD!

Oi. I'm more scared now that my girls are 15 than when they were 5. It never stops.....but fact of the matter is.........this kinda stuff has been going on for the last 5-10,000 years or so..........at least since Genghis Kahn, Atilla the Hun, and Micheal Jackson. on Apr 14th, 2004, 2:48pm, Gator wrote:Teach the kids know how to handle the situations, but don't go overboard and scare them to death so that they cannot function in society. |

I love my kids to death, that's why my 9yr olds in Karate right now, and as soon as my baby turns 6, he's going in too. I know I can't be there to protect them all the time, so they're going to have to learn to help themselves. Elaine, those are real good tips for kids! I'm going to write down the name of the book and teach those things to them. mel

Happy I know what you mean. One day Deveny and I was in Wal Mart she was about 15 my daughter and I was in the ladies section looking at jeans. She walked on the other side of the rack of jeans. When I walked around to were she was her face was white as a sheet and a man was standing beside her. He walked away real fast and I asked her what was wrong. She told me he tried to get her to go with him. I chased that SOB all throug Wal Mart couldn't get anyone to help me. He knew I was after him he would go down a ile and hide. He finally ran out the garden department. If I had caught him the police would have locked me up. I would have beat him to a pulp and asked questions later. I wish I would have caught him! I tell you they are all in their 20s now and I still worry.

| OK, now I've got a mental image of sweet little Elaine swinging a garden hoe wildly into some perv at WalMart ... and then calmly reaching for the hedge clippers It's really easy to think that "those kinds of things" don't happen here. But the sad reality is that they can & do. Like others have said, train up your kids early so they know what to do if they're ever in one of "those" situations ... and let's just hope & pray that they never will have to use what you've taught them. Take care BruceD

I'm not sure of the exact figure but since 1970, even with Columbine, SCHOOL violence is down more than 50%....more, I think. Cable "news" knows that we will stay tuned to scary stuff. Believe me, reading a 100 year old newspaper can be enlightening. Things are much much better today. The bad stuff just in the news and in grisly pictures within hours and repeated every 2 minutes. Scares everybody. FOX and CNN thrive on it. Especially FOX. Fear is what keeps us from rocking the boat. The powers that be love this. Be careful but not nuts. Charlie
