The title says it all. My home network was hacked today. I believe I know who did it, it appears that a system admin. of a web site I visit every day hacked into my network. The only thing I have found so far is that he modified emails I was sending and possibly sent some on his own. I know of one email that was modifed, and that was to Catlind.
If anyone has received emails from me in the past 24-48 hours, please consider the contents suspect.

I wish there were some kind of stealth software that would backdoor a hacker's computer while he was in yours and fry his hard drive and motherboard bios.
The chernobyl virus used to rewrite the motherboard bios, leaving the computer unusable, but mobo manufacturers got wise and added protection to it or in the case of gigabyte boards, added a backup bios chip. End users just have to be smart enough to turn it on.
"Hacker" used to be a honorable title. Not anymore.

If it's just e-mail oddities, perhaps it wasn't a hacker... Could it be that you've been infected with a virus, or that someone is spoofing your e-mail address?

I know you didn't send me any e-mails but getting to know people here, I am sure I could recognize what comes from your mind and what is being said by someone attempting to be ruthless to you. Don't worry. Shit ain't going to fly this way and taken wrong. That would be ignoring all the good you've done while here. Not going to happen, even if some internet sent words try to bend me the wrong way. It would be a lame attempt to send crap and sign your name to it.

Drk Angel - I've thought of the virus / trojan angle. Norton finds nothing. What happened was I sent Cat an email about noon. I came back just before leaving for work around 3 and started deleting emails in my sent folder. I noticed the email I sent Cat had a extra line in it I had not typed. An attempt at vulgarity. I know I did not put it there, and can think of no other way it could have gotten there other than someone was in my network as I typed the email.
I have switched to a better firewall and have reconfigured the router just in case. Any thoughts as to what else it could have been?

I am curious...is this an internal email system [Exchange, ccmail, Lotus] or something like an Internet email account [hotmail, yahoo, aol]?
If it is an Internet account, your phyisical system may not have been hacked....but rather your Internet account.

Hacked! Yeah. Fortunately Norton caught the nice little virus the superior of being (SOB) sent me before much damage was done. I was also warned by Norton to delete any links on my favorites list that I didn't recognize and damn, there was one. This little prick also must have been trying to log on to my isp with my user id 'cause I started seeing timeout errors on my login. But I still get popups that I never got before for everything from fantastic money-making deals to super sex offers. Sad part is some of the sex popups show pics that give new meaning to "Rode hard andd put up wet." Well, the new 'puter was nice while it lasted.

After all the other ideas. Here is an old one. What are you using for an e-mail client? Lookout and Lookout Express have in the past been one of the easiest ways onto a system. As far a I know they are still the most vulnerable.
Have you checked to make sure that your ports are closed when not actively sending/recieving e-mail?
A software firewall on your machine is really not all that secure. You should have a seperate cheap machine that does nothing but serve that function.
You should also be running an internal port scanner. The logs would have given you some useful info on your cracker.
Since you are in an always on/connected state an IDS would probably have made this discussion moot.
Hope some of this proves usefull.
If it is any consolation, your machine was "cracked" not "hacked".
Hackers wrote the operating system and programs you use.
Be careful out there, we're pulling for ya.

I use Outlook Express. I know it's not the best, but it's what I am used to.
I reconfigured the router, and install new firewall software. As suggested, I am talking to a Linux guru about installing a cheap Linux box and firewall software just to be sure, although from the checking I've done so far, everything seems to be fairly secure at the moment.
I know better than to use the term 'hacker" like I did.....just wasn't thinking about correct terms when I found the problem.

I was recently charged $40.00 dollars for dial-up usage on my phone line.....only problem is I have DSL so I never use the dial-up. BellSouth gives me 20 hours a month included just in case the DSL goes down (which NEVER happens).
Turns out someone cracked my username and password to my ISP log-in and were surfing away...on my bill! After much arguing BellSouth finally gave me a credit, and I now change the password regular.

I always read about this "End User" who has caused all the problems. Why can't this person be located? You would think they could be tracked by their credit card, located and taken out back to have the crap kicked out of them. End User gone -- no more problems.

Better get those security patches from Micro$oft. They release patches for 6 holes and they are major. I updated my wifes computer and I even tried windoze update , and it worked for the first time on the heavly modified win98 in runs. Crackers are hitting a lot of major machines lately, probably just wannabes messing with the smaller ones. Time to setup a headless FreeBSD server for protection.

I understand. I was just looking for other possibilities. I really find it hard to believe you were hacked. Maybe I have too much faith in my router and firewall but I've never been touched. Then again, I don't leave my network up 24/7/365. I'm using a LinkSys router and firewall. I did build a LINUX firewall from an old PC I had lying around the office but never got around to taking it home. I usually only run my network on the weekends or when I need to access my servers or end-user's PC's @ the firm.
Just food for thought. I hope your new firewall works better.

Hey guys.......I am getting ALOT of return'd emails into my JUNK mailbox my server has separate.....the addys are NO ONE I have ever emailed......I basically only email closest freinds and some family. I ran two anti virus searches......spybot and adware and stinger......plus the free online penicillan house call virus search. Found NOTHING.......I have a firewall up too. Mcafee warns me about attempted port scan attacks but blocks them ??? I eamiled my server about the returned emails that are saying they are from other servers or administraters whatever and they said they are 'spoof'.......someone used my email to send virus's and crap but the people they are sent out to block them or classified junk or virus. They told me not to worry bout it cuz doin this no one is ever 'really' sure who sent em a bug. Ok.....I'm confused how bout you ? Spoof'd by a spoofer Pam
PS: What about the emails that make no sense.....just a bunch of words in a sentence or two or three....WTF are those ???

Those "returned or undeliverable mail" is just a con to get you to think you screwed up. It wants you to open it to see what you did wrong. if you open it it will probably be a come-on to buy something to make your >*&^N!<'s bigger. Delete them! Never open something from anyone you don't know.
If it is "real" returned mail it will come from your provider, whoever you use like hotmail, yahoo, etc.

Don't worry about someone spoofing your e-mail address... Basically all they're doing is replacing the 'from' address on an e-mail message with your address... They're not actually using your e-mail account. A lot of viruses will grab a random address out of a computer's address book, and spoof it on it's virus e-mails. Also, some spammers are starting to spoof addresses they find in the mailing lists they use to try to get around anti-spam software.
Just don't open attachments on returned e-mail that you don't remember sending... Another virus mailing attempt sends an e-mail, with a spoofed address, to a bad address, so that it will be returned to the spoofed address.
