Verapamil Dosage
« on: Apr 12th, 2004, 3:59pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify Remove Remove

I'm currently taking 120 mg of Verapamil/day. I've been pain-free for a few days and deliriously pleased about that, but last night, I got nailed with a cluster that was pretty bad.

What mg dosages are other people taking? Just wondering if I should double up on mine...

Thanks.

A lot of people swear by the combo of Verap with Lithium. Jonny has been taking it for over 10 yrs, if I remember right.

Thank you, Tia & Gena. So far, the V'mil seems to be working well, but if I get another cluster, I'm going to double up on it and see what happens. I am not at risk for low blood pressure, so it shouldn't be a problem. If that still doesn't knock it out, I'm going to talk to my GP about lithium. Thanks again. PFDAN vibes to you!

Frank,
Please do not double your dose without your Dr.s
aproval.I take 960/day and have been for over a year.
My BP runs on the high side so with the verap it is
perfect. However, not everyone can take high doses of
verap because it lowers their BP too much.

Jeepster,

So far I've gotten by on 120mg a day while in cycle, but, many take much higher doses than that.

As of tonight I'm to take a 300 mg.  once a day dosage.  I am at risk for low BP and I normally run about 100/70 or so   last time I was in I was 78/43...but a second reading was 109/60...today's was 98/69 and I've been on the verapamil for 14 days.....Now this is my first bout with this demon....so not sure what or where I go from here....just beginning to learn...but this is week 6 .....and so far still counting... Undecided

Hiya Jeep,

Always, always check with your doctor before changing a medication dose, as everyone else has recommended here!  I am currently on 120mg of verapamil (non-extended release) taken 4 times a day.  It is not the most effective thing for me for preventing clusters.  Before I had CH, I was on 240mg of Extended Release (ER) for my NDPH, but once I got clusters, it was tripled to 720mg and then later to 960mg.  My blood pressure could not tolerate the higher two doses, but they were also the only two that prevented the clusters for me.  Good luck with it!!

240x2 per day(Aug.-Nov.)cyle ended.
240x1 a day through Jan.
120x1 a day for now.
My cycle is due this July so I'll bump back up to 240 in June.
I would recommend(if you hav'nt already) that you buy a blood pressure monitor. Mine cost $39.00 and it works great.

I found my effective dose to be around 720 - 960 mg/day.  That reminds me... I need to call my doc to get my script renewed... Thanks.

120/day is kids play. Doubling....or even more is in order. Reckon I'm in a minority of ONE, when it comes to asking the doc first. I take as needed, w/o crossing lines of stupidity, then call the doc and let him know what's working. He doesn't mind........he kinda likes the feedback. All verap is taken in standard release form Every 8 Hours, w/o error. Ever. Luckily, I haven't joined the coronary thrombosis or cardiac infarction clubs yet. When my chest starts spazzing, take two aspirin and yer good for another 100 miles. It's not like I'm snorting speed and shooting up heron......

Thanks, everyone. I have no medical problems at all. I've been healthy as a horse, my entire life. So far, with the exception of the headache I had the night before last, I've been pain-free since starting the Verapamil. For now, I'll stick with my present dosage, but if I start getting more headaches, then I'll start ramping it up. Thanks again.

In cycle, I take 480 mg/day of Calan SR; generic verapamil does not work as well. I also take 900 mg/day of Eskalith which also works better than the generic lithium carbonate.

Nonetheless, I will still get some headaches at night.
