Is it possible to take too many triptans. I have a prescrption for 6 Imitrex Nasals a month and 6 Zomig sprays a month. I typically go through all 12 in a month. Is this too much?

I hope not BstnEagles. I'm a chronic and I take at least one Imitrex Nasal spray a day. The last 2 weeks have been even worse. I know your not supposed to mix triptans. I've also got low blood pressure so that's a bonus when using Imitrex. I just got checked and it's still 100/70. Somebody else will have a more knowledgable answer on it though.

I can'r give you any info about Imitrex since it has been a long time since I used it but I think the rule is the same as for Zomig which I do take. A 5mg dose of Zomig can be repeated in two hours if necessary but no more than two doses in 24 hours. When my cycle is really bad I have had to take two doses a day for as long as two or three weeks running. Even now when my cycle is running down I find I have to take one at some time in the morning (time seems to vary) to get through the work day. Do NOT ever take a third 5mg dose in a 24 hour period or you may risk cardiac trouble. There are studies lately indicating that if your heart is healthy this may not matter but that is necessary to discuss with your doctor. Bill

No that's not too much. But you don't want to mix them or take them too often... But by too often, according to the guidlines that means those 12 doses should last you a minimum of 6 days... And if you have clusters you probably need more than that. So untill your insurance give you 60 sprays per month.... You're safe i think. Just don't mix or overdose otherwise you'll have a broken heart.

| Agree. I easily have taken more than that many times, but NEVER mixed them. This all depends on how it affects you though, keep the doc appointments steady for checkups. Kevin M

I never mix them in the same day. In fact if I run out of one I wait a MInimum of 24 hours before using a different one (i like 48 to be safe). Is it possible to get more than 6 per month>?

You can write your insurance company and plead to them, or you can buy it yourself. I don't have insurance... I can have all the imitrex shots I need, but I pay for them...

To buy them is pretty expensive.... I would think anyways. Maybe the insurance (BC/BS) will make an exception if I can get the doc to go along with it which may be difficult... Urgh!

Assuming you are with BCBSMA, you are limted to 6 of each nasal... Imitrex and Zomig. Simple enough to get more triptans in different forms though, under your plan. Have your doctor write out the follow scripts: Imitrex 9x100mg tablets Zomig 9x5mg tablets Amerge 9x2.5mg tablets Imitrex Syringe 1kit (2 syringes) All documented right here: http://www.bcbsma.com/pharmacy/en_US/pdf_docs/QCDAffectedDrugList.pdf Follow the guidelines for not mixing triptans as best you can. Best of luck, Rock

| The doctors told me to wait a minimum of 48 hrs. before mixing the triptans. The half life of some of them is longer than 24 hrs.

I have been going through a minimum of 60 Imitrex shots a month for the last 14 months. So far my heart is doing fine. Talk to your doc before you try that though. After all you're a shore hugging, ground gripping land lubber and a MS user to boot. So you might not be up to that regimin. Be carefull out there.

How do you reply with a answer to a question where there is no facit for a answer? think this is 1 of the exiting things about being human. We all acts differently on triptans as a cronic i have been used up to 8 shots a day for weeks and mnths without any problems or sideeffects Should we follow what Glaxo says then its max 2/day with at least 12 hours between the dozage My neuro says max 6 for a short time periode ,then another doc says a different thing. My GP says use what you need to have some quality of life So i guess you have to learn that the hard way as the rest of us does i have just 1 advice for you and that is to NOT mix triptans in any way Take care Svenn

I used 6 injections on Friday. The most i've ever used in a 24 hour period is 8 (4mg injections). Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Unsolved
