Totally NOT CH

My lifetime idol and good friend, Mr. Steve Wozniak, has just been announced as recieving an honorary doctorate for his accomplishments in computing.  I am so very happy for him.  Many people do not realize he was the first person to engineer a personal compuer with, among other things, *color*, and it was the first computer to use ROM (read only memory) to boot.  Before that, computers were pretty stupid from the moment you turned them on and needed you to basically install an operating system every time the power was turned off (it's obviously not as simple as that but you get the idea)

Anyway, it's a huge honor and recognition.  I am so proud of him I had to announce it to my family here.

Here is the announcement:

I am very pleased to announce that Mr. Steve Wozniak, the co-founder of Apple Computer and the inventor of the first commercially-successful personal computer, will receive an honorary doctorate of sciences degree from North Carolina State University.  The degree will be conferred by Chancellor Marye Anne Fox on May 15, at the Spring Commencement ceremonies.  Mr. Wozniak visited NC State's students, faculty, and staff in 2003, and toured research centers within the College of Engineering to witness the innovative work of the students and faculty firsthand.  The visit was organized by students in PackMUG, the NC State Macintosh Users Group, and attended by over 600 students, faculty, and staff from NC State and surrounding universities.

I wish to personally thank Dr. Tom Miller for presenting Mr. Wozniak's nomination, as well as Theresa-Marie Rhyne, Dr. Donald Bitzer, Dean Nino Masnari, and Chancellor Marye Anne Fox for their strong support during the nomination process.  I am grateful that Mr. Wozniak will be recognized for his accomplishments in computing.  I also want to thank the countless individuals in PackMUG, NC State University and the College of Engineering, Duke University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Apple Computer, for making Mr. Wozniak's visit last year a success.

Other distinguished recipients of the honorary degree include Eva Clayton, director-general of the World Food Summit; Harvey K. Littleton, founder of the Studio Glass Movement; and Dr. Javier Solana, secretary general of the European Union.  For more information, please visit:

Wow, the Woz is your friend, you did you get a signed Apple I? They are woth a mint. Very smart man, I like how he built hit boards with as few jumpers as possible. Now why is it that you use a Think pad?

Heh heh Opus, you know Woz gives me a hard time about the fact I didn't own a mac until recently.  I used to send email to him from outlook, and I know it bugged him.

One thing I did get (buy) from him was a Segway Human Transporter.  He is friends with Kaman (the inventor) and I think he's an investor.  In any case he has like 8 Segways.  Until you have riden one, don't knock em, they are a blast.  I talk him into selling me one of his older ones.

Steve is a no-nonsense guy.  Sometimes I think he doesn't realize how much people look up to him.  He basically invented the personal computer.  I know that sounds like exageration, but it's true.  Before Woz there was no color, no keyboard, no ROM, no small form factors... he put it all together.

Cool Fubar, congratulations to your friend, Mr. Wozniak!
He had so many accomplishments without that last  piece of paper, that's a true thinking brain and he surely deserves it.

You know, got to ride one of those in Rockerfeller Center last year; there was a demo in the Plaza.  Way cool.. but you have to remember to lean forward.. and don't freak about b/c you're afraid of falling off LOL!!

After that I just kept wondering, now where would you park one of those things where someone couldn't steal it?  Roll Eyes

you are one hell of a namedropper, I wish I had that name to drop.

There seems to be alot of computer science types with ch's, I am one myself- though I don't like to talk shop much outside the shop.  I am curious how many ch sufferers here have computer-related jobs.

It's pretty damn hard to steal one Peppermint.  The key contains a code that is unique.  It's a cryptographic key called an iButton.  The thing is, you can't start it without the right key, and it's not like you can hotwire it.  It's really quite useless without the keys.

I suppose if you left it unlocked, someone could pick it up and throw it in a truck, but it's pretty worthless at that point.

We all have them tricked out for offroad and nighttime gliding (it's not called riding... damn yuppies have to have their own special vocabulary you know).  Woz has season tickets at Shoreline Amphitheater, and after the shows we can ride them all around the parking lots and in the golf course nearby.  The skunks come out and chase you as you glide on down the paths in the dark.  Talk about fun...  but the really cool thing is at Shoreline they have a VIP entrance and you if/when you use it, the put a colored band around your wrist.  Well, we've been asking them to put it on the segway.  Now, they've used all the colors over the course of the year so a lot of times they just spot the colored band on the segway and wave us on in.  Funny as hell.
