To All My Sisters...

If each and everyone of you women over the age of 40 want to do one important thing for themselves and their loved ones, then make an appointment for a mammo. Here is my story. I am writing this not for sympathy or anything else but to show you the importance of making this appt. Last month I went for my mammo as I do every year since being on Hormone Replacement Therapy, it is a requirement. It showed something suspicious so I went in for a surgical biopsy and was diagnosed with cancer in my left breast. I will be going Apr. 30th into the hospital for 5 days to have a total mastectomy and reconstruction done from the stomach muscle and fat tissue. It is a 8-12 week recovery. Had I not gone for this test, I would not have known till it might have been too late. I am lucky, I will live! The worse part of this whole nightmare was having to tell my sons. I have not seen my 24 year old son cry before that day since he was a little boy. I think my cancer may have been caused by the HRT I was taking for 9 years. They help you thru the hot flashes and mood swings but is it really worth it? I tell you all this because you may not be as lucky as I am. Please do yourself a favor and go get them titties smashed. Its all worth it in the end. Well thats my story and I'm sticking to it. I need to stay around till I'm 90 to haunt all you guys and girls, and I will! Just call me lucky, Suzy

Hi Suzy, I'm glad to hear you caught it in time, and thanks for the reminder to get a mammogram done. I'm going to have to make an appt. again, so I'm glad you brought it up. Because I'm only 29, I have to fight tooth and nail for the dumbass med. professionals to take me seriously. I had my first one done at the age of 27 and I know they say it's not detectable at that age but I think they're spewing out a load of bullshit. Anyhow, I HAVE to get them done now because I don't want to end up like my Mom and be 6ft under at the age of 47. mel

Suzy, I am so thankful that you caught it early. My sister in law and best friend are both going through breast cancer right now. I had a false scare a couple of years ago and the specialist treated me like a jerk. I quit doing exams alltogether. Since they were not going to do anything when I found a lump anyway. I am just looking forward to starting mamiograms so that it can be taken out of my hands and put into the machines hands. Maybe the drs will trust that a little better that me finding something. You will be in my prayers for your upcomming battle.

Karla, PLEASE don't stop doing self exams. If you have breast cancer in your family you can get a mamo. sooner than 40. Mamo's are not perfect and they do miss things. I would change Dr.s. There is no reason for a Dr. to treat you like a jerk, they should treat you seriously even if it truns out to be nothing. Its your body and you know it better than anyone. There is always a chance you can find a lump with a self exam in between mamo visits.

Suzy, sending you lots of hugs, and many healing vibes. A close friend of mine just went through the exact same surgery. She's doing fine, had the mastectomy on Thursday and should be home for Monday. She too, elected for the reconstruction. Having her family & friends lend support has helped her tremendously. So I'm glad you came here to share with us. Well wishes going out on their way to you. Keeping you in my prayers. And, oh, Karla.......please, please, please......rethink your stand dear. We can't let something like this slide by. It would be quite horrible to be diagnosed and know you did nothing toward detection. Seek responsibility for your own care as we have to do with ch.....find someone who cares about YOU. hugs to all, EDNA

Thank you one and all for all your vibes and well wishes. I am a happy person if just one of you go for the mammo because of my post. That was my purpose for writing this. Karla, do NOT stop self checking yourself, just find yourself another Dr. Jonny, LMAO Randy, dont worry, I'm not really hacking up the rest of my body. Many women pay big bucks to have a tummy tuck which is what it actually is. Mel, thats very sad about your Mom. If you have breast cancer in your family then they will give you a mammo before 40 so please do it. Ree, thank you. I will not be home later today but will call you during the week. Thanks again. I love all of you! Suzy

Suzy I'm sending you all the vibes I can possibly muster. This is sad news but I'm so glad they found it early. My mother's sister died from breast cancer because she refused modern medical treatment. My mother has had 4 lumps removed. They did a baseline mammo on me when I was 26 because of the family tendency. After my hysterectomy they put me on HRT. I stayed on it for 3 months and when I found a lump, I decided that was it, with the heart problems and possible breast cancer connection I stopped taking the HRT. I haven't had a mammo in quite some time. But your post is going to urge me to get in and get one done. I'm so glad that you are able to be treated. Be strong girl, you have a will and power of life that shines through in your every move. Hang in there and know that we are all behind you 100%. If there's anything you need, just say the word and I know the family will be there. Best wishes girl, and thanks for the prodding - I guess my ostrich ways need end - sometimes, it is better to know. Cat
