Actually it's not line being opened under load. It's called a Reactor Switcher and is used to energize and de-energize a 500,000 volt Reactor. Reactors are just dummy loads connected to a bulk power transmission line to control the reactive load and voltage on the line. In this case the switcher had failed a few days earlier and after inspection (nothing wrong was found) it was decided to try to duplicate the problem. And did with great success!
The Reactor Switcher failure happened at the Eldorado Transmission Switching Station in Boulder City, NV and happens to be where I work. I was not on shift that but sure wish I had been.

In my 35+ years of doing that kind of work I have never pulled the wrong switch.........
or been caught doing it.
That's my story and I'm sticking with it.
