Migraine sufferers

Hello, I have a question for migraine sufferers. I know this is not a migraine site, but I also know that many of you suffer both. My sister in-law has been having migraines pretty bad lately. This last one has lasted 4 days. Today she is throwing up. What should she take??? Any info would be great.

Hey there Andrea!
My mother suffers from horrific migraine's too and they usually last 3 days or so if untreated. Nothing over the counter works for her. My dad will take her down to the hosptital to get a shot of demerol and graval(sp?) in the but and she usually feels relief within mins or so. Hope she feels better soon.

Thanks guys! She went to the Dr. today and he gave here Immitrex. the problem is that she is afraid to take it because the Dr. told her it could make her sick and since she is already sick, she doesn't want to waste it. She is not sure how much longer she will have insurance. I told her, she is probably sick because of the migraine and its worth a try. I feel horrible for her. She is also my babysitter. She is dealing with this and has my 2 and 4 year old following her around and wanting to "take care of her".
Will the Immitrex make her sick?

she should go to the ER and get one of those shots that make you stop throwing up - then take the imitrex. You're right - there's NO point taking it until she stops getting sick. But, WHY would the doctor give her imitrex, and not give her something to stop the vomiting..... geesh.
You said she wont have her insurance much longer.... so that means she STILL has it?? If so, get her to the ER and get that shot.. 4 days is enough.

Migraines that last longer than 72 hours need some kind of treatment because there are possibly some dangerous consequences to an intractable migraine. However, I've had a migraine for over 3 years...some intractable migraines just won't budge.
Imitrex for some migraineurs is a bad med because the half-life of imitrex is short, and the relapse rate for the migraine headache can be high for many people. Other triptans are longer acting...drawing a blank on which ones act the longest, but I know that frova is one.
DHE is very effective for migraine. Narcotics really only mask the pain. If the migraine is gone after the narcotics wear off, it is generally because the migraine has run its course. Otherwise when the narcs wear off, the migraine will be back.
I use thorazine and DHE as migraine abortives, and I take ultracet for pain (which is a combo of muscle relaxant and acetaminophen). My new doctor wants to eventually find me a combination of a NSAID, a triptan, and an anti-nausea. The anti nausea's most used for migraine are phenergan, compazine, and zofran. It is often very standard for migraineurs to get a combo shot of pain-killer and anti-nausea if they go to the ER.

There are fantastic anti-nausea meds that can be prescribed....
Phenegren
Compozine
Vistoril
There are pills - that is if you can catch it soon enough...
Suppozitories
shots...
When I have to go tho the ER phenegren works the best... but it burns like battery acid....
I feel for her.... Suffering is suffering and I am sorry that she has to go through that... I definate understand the puking part.

Imitrix does not make me sick at all. In fact when I take it when I am sick and down with a migraine It makes me feel all better. It takes away the nausea and helps me to function again.

If you have an uncle that has a problem with gas, you can get plenty of advice here, as long as he doesn't have migraines.

The "about" site (which, by being mentioned previously, has actually broken the same law as the "do not remove this tag under penalty of law," law) is one of the best for up-to-date information, chat and links.

Yeah, meegraineurs do have it tough but this is not the proper forum for meegrain discussion. There are so many more sites deddicated to meegrains and I respecctfully suggest you direct your queries in that direction. I do respect your inquiry and hope your friend has recieved proper direction to a web site more specific to his/her problem.

To the best of my knowledge none of those issues will further confuse anyone about the proper distintions between Meegraine and Clusterheadache. You know the distinction we've all worked to promote so there is no confusion and CHers get appropriate diagnosis and treatment? Yeah thats the one.

Sorry to hear about the pain.
My grains? I take oats, rye and barley. Some here will include wheat. Also, try mixing with off the shelf additives like bananas, blueberries and cinnamon.
Cluster sharing, as might be expected, about my grains.

Did ya ever think that to be able to make a clear distinction between two things, you must evaluate not only the differences but also the similarities of both. To do that, one must actually discuss and investigate both?
Kindly explain to me how the people that actually offered words of advice other than URL's, added to the confusion between diagnosing clusters and diagnosing migraines?
Kindly explain to me how a few words of advice on how to remove some pain from the life of a relative of a member here, adds to the confusion in treating cluster headaches?
Did one of the many doctors posting here get confused?
You guys can take your time on the replies because I have to go visit the migraine sites and I'll be busy for a while.
A few words to someone about migraines does not confuse the issues above, any more than offering a few words of support to someone regarding any other issue discussed here.

First off...Andrea stated that she knows this isn't a migraine site, but she knows that some of us suffer from both. Well...that's true...MANY of us suffer from both. I don't see what the problem is with her request. Also, she's asking for information from people she trusts. Sometimes it is hard to jump right in on another message board and ask for help when you haven't really spent a lot of time reading and learning what it's like there.
And then there's this issue of why you guys hate people with migraines so much. If you don't, at least know that that is the image you are putting across. Constantly calling them "meegraines" and blasting to hell anyone who mentions them.
I'm aware that there are many of you who are extremely bitter over the fact that it took your doctors a long time to diagnose you with clusters, and that they were called migraines for many of you, as well. WELL, shouldn't your bitterness and anger be directed at those doc's who misdiagnosed you? Why do you feel the need to be so bitter and angry against other people suffering in a great amount of pain. Pain sucks, any way you slice it. Just because one pain may be worse than another does not mean we should act like another's pain is worthless and not important. To THAT person, they are experiencing their worst form of pain. You can find whiners and people with great amounts of strength suffering from any kind of pain out there. So the attitude that migraineurs are whiny and their suffering is worthless and stupid is very troubling.
Sorry if this post offends anyone, but I just feel that the discriminatory and belittling attitude is a little over the top. I suffer from both migraines and clusters...does that mean I'm supposed to never talk about how the migraines affect my life, too, and only discuss clusters? Pink is right...other people discuss the other medical problems they are having. My migraines and clusters do have a few similarities, but also many many differences. I'm well aware of that, and I don't think that discussing how both affect my life blurs any lines of distinction.

Well said Lizzie! You won't change their minds though.
Despite what people here think, we have a lot to thank proactive migraine sufferers and their doctors and research staff for as many of our treatments came from them.
Instead of being divisive and exclusive and sticking in our "we've got clusters" mentality, perhaps we should realise that we can gain by talking to Migraine groups and sufferers. We do here, and I draw your attention to a thread on the "Clusterheadache specific" board where it was being claimed that the reduction in CH diagnosis time in the UK was down to DJ and ch.com (DJ wasn't claiming this btw it was being claimed for him )

This was a survey of UK data on the 90's. Most of it was long before CH.Com and OUCH of any variety.
The patient groups in question were the Migraine Action Association (formerly BMA) and to lesser extent the Migraine Trust who have both been helping CH sufferers for longer than any other organisation.

I forgot to mention the walnuts.

As I understand it, the eggs are the certain ingredient which he says are the secret. All told, it involves the eggs of a Mop-Noodled Finch, Beagle-Beaked-Bald-Headed Grinch, Shade-Roosting Quail, a Spritz, a Flannel-Wing Jay, Twiddler Owls, a Kweet, a Wog (that only eats blossoms from Beezlenut Trees.
There are others, but the good doctor goes on and to not confuse anyone, I suggest the book.
