CH and anesthesia?

I remember a long time ago reading in here how anesthesia was a trigger for some peoples CH. I am wondering if thats true and if so how did they deal with it? I'm going into surgery Monday and having missed my cycle this Oct. I thought great, I'm skipping this year. NOT! Wouldnt you know, 4 days before they cut me up, the f--cker decides to come back with vengence. Was not a good 2 weeks here. 3 broken ribs, a swollen face from abcess, bad mammo report...I thought it couldnt get any worse till I got slammed. I thought stress keeps him away? One good thing, I tried the imitrex injection for the first time, I used pills last time and BAM, 5 minutes later...gone...How I went so many years without meds is beyond me now. Thanks for anyones input on the anesthesia thing. Its got me a little concerned. Suzy

Suz, Sorry to hear, that your yearly cycle came anyway, though late. I can't say about anesthesia, but when you're under, you are completely knocked out, so it shouldn't be a problem. My guess anyway. Ozzy

Last October I has sinus surgery, in cycle.. ...woke up with a headache and kept it till I altered my Therapy. I don't think the anesthesia had a lot to do with my head but I was so sick when I woke up it's hard to remember now. Good Luck! Mark

Greetings suzy617 Sorry to hear you've had such a bad week! Please look after yourself; take a bit of a break and indulge yourself a little. (No laughing with broken ribs tho'!) OUCH! I think you might remember my post about Mopar's reaction to the anaesthetic he had when he had both carpal tunnels operated on. It was all bad I'm afraid, but Mopar is chronic (a real chronic's chronic ) and the reaction he had is not common - many people on this board have had anaesthetics with few problems. We did however, learn that there is more than one option when it comes to anaesthetic drugs and some are safer to use on clusterheads than others, so talk to your anaesthetist and surgeon and tell them you suffer from CH. This way, you'll get the drug least likely to cause complications. All the very best suzy617! We'll be thinking about you on Monday. Please let us know how it went. firebrix

Yo Fran, Pisscutter with the surgery and all. Anesthesia may or may not induce a CH for you..........but since you're in the middle of MoFo time......plan on getting slammed while in the hospital. Talk to the docs AHEAD of time......SCREAM into their faces that you use O2/Trex injections, have CH, and are demanding immediate treatment if you get hit. Find out if you can bring your own juice, or if they can have it ready for you in 2 minutes or less. Have it all documented on paper/chart out the yazoo BEFORE you walk in the front door, or you won't stand a chance. Just did a little overnight visit myself. Took 2 1/2 hours to get a damned jug of water and a cup from the floor nurse. God knows how long it would've taken if I asked for 2 Tylenol to go with that. Planning is everything, RJ

I did have a problem with it. I was on Topomax for a long time and I just know it's what caused me to get kidney stones (twice). The first time I had to have Lithotripsey (sp). I woke up in the recovery room still drugged up but screaming in pain. It wasn't from the surgery or the stent, it was a full blown CH attack. They gave me an Imitrex injection and I went back to la-la land. Later that day the docs said it was probably the anesthesia that triggered the headache. UNSOLVED

Suz... I wish I could offer more info on this topic, however, I have not had any surgeries or invasive proceedures that required anesthesia to draw any info from. At least not since the diagnosis of my clusters. Hope ya get better soon, Ramon

I had minor procedure while under anesthesia (short time under) and did not have a CH (was in cycle). Maybe you'll get lucky?--Hope so. Happy gave you good advice. Prepare your doctor(s) for this and have advanced permission for imitrex injection or something in case you do get one. Good luck, John

I was in a cycle and on the pre-op table waiting to go into surgery and you know who showed up. I started getting scared when it got to about a k6 and the anesthesologist comes in, ask me how I'm doing and I tell him I've got a bad headache coming on. He says we'll take care of that and sure enough he did, 6 hours later I woke up with no headache....probably the best abortive I've ever had, lol. I was even able to sleep that night but the next day it picked up right where it left off. Good luck tomorrow, Jim

Suzy, I vaguely remember reading a thread from earlier this month (thinking it was about Svenn's surgery) that suggested that surgical anesthesia sometimes disrupted the Beast's cycle ... and might even get you off the hook for this year's cycle if you're lucky. Since it's Monday it's probably too late to be of help in easing your pre-op concerns, but I'll be hoping the Beast gives ya' a break since you're paying your dues elsewhere. -John

Suzy: I too am having a minor surgery event on Thursday so you really posted a timely message. I sure hope your biopsy is 100% good news. I will have to have a biopsy as well and I know that I am very nervous about this, so I can relate to what you are going through. Please keep us posted and I will do the same.
