Computer Problem

My computer is acting strange. When I used to click on a web site link (typed in blue with a line under it) the puter went straight to it. Now, I hear the puter buzzing and I see the new web page title up at the top of the screen but I am still on my original page. I can hit the little square in the top right hand corner and it will open the page. It just started doing this yesterday. Any ideas why?

For a programmer (or former programmer, or outta work programmer...) I'm pretty ignorant about the internet and browsers, but...a few things come to mind. Your browser settings could have been hosed. If you're using Internet Explorere got to Tools/Internet Options, then click on the Advanced tab. If you are not too particular how your browser is set up... just click the button in the lower right "Restore Defaults"...that should set things up as they should be rather than trying to figure out what all these cryptic settings do. It is also possible that you picked up a virus, or that you have some sort of spyware that has altered the performance of your browser. To combat these issues you need to have a good anti-virus software like Norton (and use it!) and ALSO have some sort of anti-spy ware program like Spy-Bot Search and Destroy...AV and Spy Ware control ARE NOT the same!!!!! Spy ware is unlikely to wipe out your hard drive or disable your anti-virus or firewall software, but it can make your other sotware run slow or do odd things... But try resetting the browser to it's default and see if the address bar works right. After that you might need to re-install the browser...

A little more information is needed, like you Operating system ( for example WindowsXP, OSX, Linux Mandrake), and your browser type ( for example Internet explorer, Mozilla, Opera ) For the best help. I am assuming that you are using WindowsXP and IE6 and also assuming that you just got the security update for IE6. Personally I have not heard of problems with the latest update but you never know. On the other hand, you stating that the other page is found on the top says to me that you are using Mozilla Firefox aka firebird, if so then this is normal behavior. It is so you can finish reading the page while the link loads in the background. I don't think this can be changed yet as this is beta software and still needs work. Opus/Paul

Thanks guys....... I am using IE6 and Windows 98. I believe that I have picked up some sort of spyware. I am gonna download spybot search and destroy and see if that does it. Again thanks for responding to my post.
