U.S. Rep. Bill Janklow _________________________________________________________ What he did: _________________________________________________________ U.S. Rep. Bill Janklow The Republican was charged in connection with the August 16 death of a motorcyclist at an intersection near Janklow's hometown, Flandreau. The charges, which were filed Friday morning, also include one count of failing to stop at a stop sign, one count of driving "at least" 71 mph in a 55 mph zone and one count of reckless driving, said Karla Bjerke, clerk of the court in Moody County. http://www.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS/08/29/janklow.charged/ _________________________________________________________ The result: _________________________________________________________ Janklow gets 100 whole days for manslaughter Rapid City Journal "Former Congressman Bill Janklow was sentenced in Flandreau Thursday to 100 days in jail, three years probation and ordered to pay more than $5,000 in fines for his manslaughter conviction in the Aug. 16 accident that killed a Minnesota man... Janklow also must pay $50 a day during his incarceration. He will have his driving privileges suspended for three years. But after three years probation, Janklow may have his record cleared of the crime." [Where are those mandatory minimum sentences when you need one?] Read article... http://www.rapidcityjournal.com/articles/2004/01/22/news/janklow/news858 .txt _______________________________________________________ If you or I did this, would we get a measly 100 days?

It's crap like this that really chaps my ass. You and I would do more time for speeding drunk through a school zone.

I reckon if Kennedy can do it........ Diplomatic immunity is a bitch, the beauty of it is that there are elections coming this year and the guy will most likely be out of a job next term. It just sucks that it isn't now. When he leaves office, I sincerely HOPE that the family of the deceased presses a civilian suit. The Irony here is that 3/4 of the time the guy probably doesn't drive himself anywhere so the privilage revocation doesn't mean squat and the fines are pocket change to his salary and benefits. The punishment should fit the crime in this case. Rediculous, Ramon

I know some really nice guys in prison that got life without parole for killing someone while driving drunk. That is unbelievable. How many do you think didn't even get that much though because of a cover-up???

I really hope he finds love interests in prison. 100 days is just long enough for the prick to set up a book deal. He gets to drive again. How nice. Charlie

Yea, being a cycle rider and a political non-supporter I was so outraged when I saw the headlines it made me wanna puke. To bad he will be serving those 100 days in a local jail instead of a state pen. Put his fat butt in a state pen, in general population and he might find out what 'brotherly love' is all about. Diplomatic immunity is a real thing here in DC. When one sees a vehicle with a diplomatic plate, you get as far away as possible. Because if something happens, no matter whom is at fault, it is you who pays and is fined. Just my 2 cents.

I think it's deplorable, but I'm not sure it's as unevenhanded as you think. One of my bartenders killed a man on the way home one night. She had just consumed a couple 'after shift' drinks and she hit this man in the middle of a dark street. It's not clear if the man was passed out already (in the road), but the car only had damage on the bumper, as if he may have been at least on his butt in the road. The man's blood alcohol was quite high, suggesting that he may have passed out where she hit him. In any case, she was found to be intoxicated and was charged with manslaughter. She only spent 90 days in jail. I'm only pointing this out to say that YES the sentencing is ridiculous, but it's not uncommon. YES I know politicians get better treatment, as do rock stars, sports stars and the A-list in Hollywood. Hey, when the day comes that you can't buy your freedom in America, well I guess I'll think about moving.

FUCK JANKLOW!!!! Before he killed a fellow motorcyclist he bragged about how he liked to drive fast. then he finally kills someone and does'nt even have the dignity to take full responsibility for it.While in office no less! His blood sugar or some BULLSHIT like that instead of taking full responsibilty with no excuses like a decent human being would. that guy can go straight to hell. ...Mark....who rides a motorcycle.

This guy has already bugged out.............. http://clerk.house.gov/members/election_information/south_dakota_atlarge /index.php How old is this guy 70 or so? Weve got way to many drug users in jail to make room for old grandpa's like this guy. The sentance should equate to the criminal intent. In this case an old man fucked up and killed a dude. Did he plan it or mean for it to happen? I don't think so. If you lived in South Dakota you would probably drive faster than 71 mph, if you didn't you would never get anywhere. He has lost his job and been humiliated, give the old man a break. Lee

Old man or not, he killed someone due to his continued breaking of the law. And why, because he thought he was above it all and bragged about it to boot. Tell you this much, if that SOB ever crosses my path, he will have to deal with my rath. If you would like to dispute this one off-line Lee, feel free to email me at brq@kdlltd.com.

357, Dude, I said what I think is the correct way to handle this, only my opinion, sorry you disagree but that would be your right, if your looking for a fight over this with me your pissing in the wind, I really don't care that much one way or the other. A point I did make that apparently went over your head was that we have no room for petty criminals like this as our prisons are full of hardcore people convicted of petty drug use. Have a nice day! http://www.rapidcityjournal.com/articles/2004/01/22/news/janklow/news858 .txt From the story at the above link: Third Circuit Judge Rodney Steele said Janklow must report at 9 a.m. Feb. 7 to the Minnehaha County Detention Center in Sioux Falls to begin his sentence. Steele said that after 30 days in jail, Janklow could begin doing community service for 10 hours a day, six days a week for the remaining 70 days. Where the hell is the justice in this country anymore?
