As an IT Pro (currently without work...  ) my advice to avoid computer viruses is this:
1) use a good anti-virus program
2) don't trust much of anythign that comes through e-mail anymore
3) find a utility or two that scan your computer for spy-ware. these insidious programs are resposible for a lot of data stealing, and general computer malaise...
