Does anyone know how many people in the world get cluster headaches?

Has this number gone up in the past years?

The estimates are all over the board - 1 per thousand (0.1%) to  2.5 per thousand in the US.  In Norway, one study estimated 326 to 381 per 100 000 (3.2 - 3.8 per thousand).  China:  0.06 per thousand.  San Marino 0.7 per thousand.

If the number has been going up, the first thing to look at is better diagnosis, or a change in criteria used to define clusters.  Latitude has a big role in circadian disorders - farther from the equator = more circadian problems, in general.  Light and electromagnetic radiation can also mess up circadian cycles. I would bet there is less CH in rural areas without electricity.

I think you will see the number increase, due to correct diagnosis...........

Hopefully, we don't see the numbers increase due to misdiagnosis of CH...

Right on, Chris.  Very important point.

I've seen info stating 0.069%.  I'd say that's probably quite accurate... but that's just me.

I  agree. And due to information tech becoming more and more sophisticated, i.e. the internet, satellite communications, etc., the word about Clusters will spread much faster. Look what it has done here in just the last 5 years.

but does this factor in *continental drift*?

...and the fact that people who have computers know about this MOFO--and THIS site?....

but those who DON'T have computers: about 90+% of the population of the planet.... may be suffering ....silently?

just a random thought....

At the university I went to (approx 25,000 students) there was (according to the Uni Doc) only one other CH sufferer.  If this is to translated across australia then 0.0125% (I think - I didn't do a maths degree! Undecided)

this figure seems slim, but possible.  I'm interested - what do you want to know for? just FYI, or something to present to neuros with?

How did the University MD know how many CH sufferers there were?

For such a rare occurence that sample size is probably not adequate, even if you knew with certainty the rate of CH in that population.  I'll leave it to the statistic majors to do the calculations, but an MD should know better than to extrapolate that way.  He could say, "The known rate of cluster headache in the student population at this university is xx.xx%" but anything else would be inaccurate.

No, it's not a headache--it's a Stage Ten Primary Chronic Periodic Idiopathic Trigeminovascular Cephalalgic Crisis.
