Brain Tumor

There was a man in his mid-forties who was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He was put on chemotherapy, and seemed to be responding well to it, until one day, while he was at a big family function with a bunch of his relatives, he suddenly clapped his hands to the top of his skull and said, "Ohh, I have a terrific headache!" and collapsed on the ground.

(On the bright side, at least it wasn't a Cluster headache!)

His family, knowing his condition and greatly concerned, rushed him to the hospital, where he was quickly placed on a stretcher, still unconscious, and wheeled into another room. The family had nothing to do at that point but wait.

They crowded into the waiting room and sat or stood around glumly, not saying much. At times, one family member would look worriedly at another one, or touch someone's arm gently for support, but that was about all. There were quite a few of them in the little waiting room; aunts, uncles, cousins, brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews, plus all of their husbands and wives, all looking mostly at the floor with worried expressions on their faces.

Several hours went by.

Finally, a doctor came down the hall and approached them. "I've got good news, bad news, good news, and bad news," he told the family.

"The good news is, he's still alive, and for the moment, we've got him stable.

The bad news is, his tumor is back and bigger than ever, and is now in a life-threatening position. Surgery to remove it is far too risky at this point.

The good news is we think there's something we can do for him. We now have the ability to do a full brain transplant. It's a new procedure, it's still officially classified as an experimental procedure, and it is somewhat risky, but we have been having a great deal of success with it. With your permission, we would like to go ahead with it. Frankly, at this point, we think it's the best chance he has by far.

The bad news is, because this procedure is still considered experimental, the insurance companies will pay for the operation, but not for the brain itself. You'll have to pay for the new brain yourselves, and, depending on which kind you get, they can be rather expensive."

The family sat and looked at the doctor for a moment, quietly absorbing all that he had told them. Finally, one of them spoke up. "Well, how much does a brain cost, exactly?"

"Well," the doctor replied, "A male brain costs $9,000.00. A female brain costs $45.00."

There was an awkward pause.

Then, in spite of the gloomy situation, the male members of the family began to chuckle and snicker under their breath. Finally, one of them couldn't take it any more.  Grinning, he said, "Tell me, doctor, why are the female brains so cheap?"

The doctor cleared his throat and shuffled his feet uncomfortably. "Well," he said, "You see, we had to mark the female brains down a whole lot because they're the only ones that have actually been used."

BTW, at one point I considered having a brain transplant myself...

...but I changed my mind.
