I have been suffering from headaches that meet almost all of the criteria of the CH for 5 years. I have had windows cut into my sinuses and deviated septum surgery. I have been in this session of headaches for 3 weeks twice a day and desprate. I have an appointment with my Family Doctor in about 45 min. Last year he refered me to a Nerologist and I didn't go. I was sure that it was sinus related and wish I would have looked sooner. I will most likly not see a Nerologist for several weeks after refered. should I ask for Imitrex until I see a Nerologist? Does it stop the pain? Last night lasted 3 hours and I will not go through that again!

Thank You, I'll go to the Neroloist this time and I hope it works. Do you know the frequency of suicide from CH?

Seeing a Neuro will be the key to a proper diagnosis. Get educated here before you go many are not up to speed on CH. Before jumping on the trex wagon read about oxygen. This seems to be a great way to abort the pain without all the side affects of trex. Don't get me wrong Trex is magic for a ton of people but o2 has a lot less complications. Melatonin is a nonscript suppliment that is available in any pharmacy or drug store and has helped alot of people. Most people will take 6-9 mg. an hour or so before going to bed and it helps with the nighttime hits. Ice packs on the head and neck while you are in pain helps. Drinking lots of cold water also helps. strong coffee also helps. Whats has helped me the most is forcing myself to relax and not get all wound up and tense during the attack. Slow rythmic breathing and forcing the body to relax help shorten the attack for me. It won't stop the pain from coming but it works for me and I think beneficial in the long run.

I know that suicidal thoughts seem to be common among us (that's why this place is so great we can talk to other people who get what we go through), I don't know statistics. If you are feeling that way I urge you to 1. Resist those feelings and fight this monster 2.Tell your doctor 3.Talk about it with us. Please - hang in there...we're here for you!

I Appreciate your help. I went to my family doctor and he started me on Prednisone and Verapamil 180 mg. Vicodin 5/500 and Imitrex 50 mg for pain. I have to do yet another MRI and wait 6 weeks to see a Nerologist. Well, he said if this doesn't help he will make him take me sooner. I'll hang around, in between the pain I'm a very happy person. But when its on...oh my God. Also, Is there a Generic for Imitrex? I don't mean to complain but it better work for that much money. I have some Zomig also but I have had it for at least 1 1/2 years. It doesn't desolve like it used to do you know the shelf life?

Hi Hoosierdaddy, Have you checked the oxygen info (button on the left)? O2 is a great abortive with the least amount of side effects. Check your PMs..... ......you've got a note from a fellow hoosier... Good Luck, Jacks

Been there done that! You didn't mention if you asked for or received O2.It's is the single most helpfull thing I have found for CH,and no side effects. As for the vicodin. If it helps I would say you are not a cluster head.It has never worked for me or anyone I know for CH.And make sure you understand what rebound headaches are.The Imitrex will help but be carefull.Follow your drs.orders and have someone with you the first time you dose.Good luck.David

I didn't ask about O2. He never mentioned it and i guess he wants to see if the Imitrex works. If it doesn't I'll get the O2 tomorrow.

Hi Hoosier, You should really get Imitrex injections or Zomig nasal spray. You have pills which DO NOT act fast enough to abort a CH. The meds you received are o.k. for prevents, but I suggest going back and getting abortive meds. 02 is another abortive option. Abortives can be dangerous if you have other medical conditions so make sure you talk to your doc. I wouldn't wait until your Neuro appointment before getting another abortive. Good luck to you.

In all my yeras I know of only one suicide. It was an individual who posted here. To be truthful, the CH may have been only one of many factors that contributed to that decision. I know of no one who has taken the suicide option solely due to clusters.
