Sleep Patterns

Since CH has been directly related to the hypothalamus, and the hypothalamus controls our circadian rythyms, I wonder how many of us have gone through life with a normal sleep patern- if there is such a thing. I myself, have never worked a 9-5 job. Because of the nature of my work, my hours and sleep have always been all over the board(clock). I'm sure this has been discussed before but I'm too lazy to search it out. TIA for all input. ............................alley

Hello alleyoop, You're right, this has been discussed before. Pubgirl brought it up about a month ago. Here's a link to that tread: http://www.clusterheadaches.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=chspecific;a ction=display;num=1094264268 Have no idea if the link works but the thread was titled "Weird Sleeping Habits" and was started by pubgirl. Hope this helps. Personally, i never had what you call "normal sleep pattern" and i don't have a job to blame this on PFDAN to all, Perry.

Perry, Thanks for the link! That's the kind of feedback I was looking for. It sure seems there's a link between irregular sleep patterns and CH. I would like to hear from anyone who can repudiate that; anyone who has had a more or less normal sleep patern predating their CH. Of course I would think that the percentage of people who have had a "normal sleep patern" as adults would have to be small. Thanks for the input........... ...................................alley

Though I'm certainly aware of the circadian rhythm, hypothalamus and CH connection, sometimes I think it's kind of like the chicken and egg thing. When I was younger, I worked at night (by preference) in a busy ER ... never slept normal hours and never slept well ... but never had clusters. Later work gave me much stress, so would continue to wake at odd hours trying to solve the problems of the world (and my employees) ... still no clusters. Since I've started having CH's (episodic - just finishing the third cycle - but now at a relatively stress-free time in my life when real sleep is possible), I can see a pattern. Just before a cluster cycle starts (about a week), I begin waking several times a night and having trouble going back to sleep. It never fails that the beast pays it's first visit of the cycle at one of those witching hours. Once the cycle is under control with meds, I continue to wake at those hours for quite some time. Once the cycle is done, my sleep returns to normal. So which DOES come first? ... the cluster or the sleep disorder? Kris

I think I slept much better about before... oh about 7 years ago. That's when I did landscaping for a living. It's hot here in New Orleans and the sun over a 10 hour work day would drian the life outta ya. I would pick up my girlfriend (who is my wife now) and we would go to my apartment. I would fall asleep around 9:00PM and she would watch TV. She would wake me up at midnight. I would bring her home then I would return home go back to sleep until 7:00Am. This is how it always was. Now I have an office job and I like to watch TV late at night so I don't think I get as much sleep now but I don't blame it on my CHs. I have been waking up early in the morning with some CHs though. Usually by that time I have gotten enough sleep to make it through the rest of the day.
