"Cluster headaches are a young person's disease"

Oh?
Other than that, it's pretty good.

Pretty good article.  The phrase that it's a young persons disease comes from the time of onset of the condition (I started with Ch when I was 28 ), so it's not entirely inaccurate.

Best wishes

That's not quite accurate.

Hello everyone,

Quote:
In about 20% of people with cluster headaches, the attacks may be chronic, meaning there are less than 14 headache-free days per year

To my knowledge this in not accurate either. I believe the IHS has altered that to 30 days and i think it is 30 consecutive days -not a number of pain-free days per year.

PFDAN to all,
Perry.

The article is more accurate overall than inaccurate.

We should be grateful MSN has put out anything at all about CH.

My take is that it is very accurate.  Clusterheads are much more boozers and smokers than the general population.
After digging into 5HT I have come to believe that what causes us to have clusters also causes us to have addictive personalities.  So, clusters are not caused by smoking and drinking but smoking and drinking is caused by the same thing that causes our clusters.

What got me thinking that way was an article I saw that spoke of using certain 5HT agonists or antagonists (don't remember which) to treat alcoholism.

Bob I was referring to the symantics of that statement...
"Cluster headaches are also common in people who smoke and drink alcohol frequently. "

Is not accurate.
An overwhelming majority of people that drink and smoke heavily do not have clusters.

It should have read something like "Cluster headache sufferers have a high occurence of smoking and drinking frequently"... Or something...

Thought the article was pretty good, am printing it out and giving a copy to my boss, so he know's what the deal is.  As for the drinking/smoking debate...my first CH was at 15, 21 years ago.  I wasn't drinking, smoking or toking then, didn't start that for a couple of years after.  My natural father on the other hand was a raging drunk and drug abuser.  Is there a connection there?

Nice artical, have to say that they are pretty much right on track with accuracy. I started my clusters at the age of 12. here I am now 21 years later hating the beast even more and more for it seems to become more severe with age!

I'm interested in the statement that CH can be 100 times more intense than migraines.  While I can testify to the severity of CH, I've never had a migraine.  Can anyone who suffers both compare them for me?

Hi gpolma

I can't do it really but here goes with a few stabs

When I had my first migraine I thought I was dying from a brain tumour. When I had my first cluster headache, I KNEW I was. I think migraine is now an irritation.

Migraine is childbirth with gas and air
A clusterheadache is worse than childbirth pain without pain relief and with someone taking your eyeball out with a road drill at the same time

Migraine pain is to cluster pain what a broken fingernail is to an amputation without anaesthetic

Nope, can't do it

I'm with Don on this one.  I'm grateful for any information that goes out to the public on this horrible sydrome, disease, or whatever it is you want to call it.

Overall, I think it was pretty accurate, though I'd certainly never call this a young person's disease.  I was 39 years old when I had my first cluster cycle.

Do you think I could set some kind of weird record with that?

I agree with Wendy on this one...

Here is my analogy...Migraine is like crying wolf and cluster is like being mauled by a pack of wolves!!!
The first time I had a cluster (after about fifteen years of migraines) I thought that it was all over. My head was finally going to explode!
Isn't strange how you can get used to one level of pain and think it is the most hideous on this earth, only to be shocked back into reality when experiencing about ten times worse???

I think they were talking about the median age of Cluster Heads.

I work with someone who just got their first CH in May.  He is 59 and had no idea what was happening or where to go.  Gave him a bunch of info from here and told him to go to a neuro.  Hated to see another person join the victims of the Beast, but having 2 of us at work helps get the time off with no questions.
