Question about "ice cream" headaches

Hello fellow sufferers and symphathizers. In reading the postings, I see I am a relative "newbie" where cluster's are concerned. Started getting them about five years ago and always got them right around Thanksgiving...that is until this year. Started having them this week which is something new for me as it has never been in the summer. I take Depakote from Oct 1st until Dec 31st and that had me headache free for two years. Back on the Depakote to try and stop these but no luck so far. Quick question.....are any of you cluster sufferers more susceptible to "ice cream headaches" than most people you know? I can get an ice cream headache from cool water and will most assuredly get one from anything that is very cold. Just trying to get a better idea of wht's heppening behind my right eye. Thanks ~ Greg

Hi, Greg! Welcome to the website. No unusual ice cream headaches here. I drink lots of ice water, ice tea and eat the occassional bowl of ice cream. I can only remember having one of those in recent months and that was when I stupidly drank a Sonic Lime Slush too fast. Gator

No major suseptibility to cold. Could be a side effect of the depakot. That stuff really had a bad effect on me. PFDAN!

Last time I had "brainfreeze" must have been 8 or so years ago when I was super-thirsty and gulped down too much of a slush too fast. So, I don't feel succeptible to ice-cream headaches. Good luck on your quest... as that is what it feels like trying to understand the thing!

Gusher, I have noticed that sometimes (rarely, though) drinking cold water can cause a CH to begin shortly afterwards. But ice-cream HA? Not that one for me. Best wishes, sandie99

I am always careful with ice cream or ice because I get ice cream headaches. But slushies or popsicles or anything I have to be really really careful with. Also, interestingly to me.....on the roof of my mouth, where the roots of my top teeth end, about the 3rd tooth in, on the CH side, I can rub my tongue there, and cause the spot where my CH start to be very sensitive and sometimes painful. Odd. Maybe that is the spot where the ice cream headache comes from. Although I think sometimes the ice cream headaches come from swallowing the freezing cold stuff too fast. Ah...I don't know...just rambling. C ya.............Little Deb

Through my childhood and early teen years, I got the "brain-freeze" quite often, not so much now.
