After a 3 year remission my CH returned in full glory 4 days ago. Saturday I went to the emergency room to get some meds until I get to the neuro. Iwas prepared to be removed by security if they failed to treat me properly for CH and NOT MIGRAINE.
Enter the ER Doc. Whats the problem?
CH
What are your symptoms?
I give them.
The ER doc orders a shot of imitrex and 40 MG of prednisone. He suggest I get some sleep while I am there.
The nurse comes in looking baffled. Why?
The doc also ordered administration of oxygen with a non rebreather mask at a flow rate of 15. Nurse never heard of that for MIGRAINE. She got a quick education.
I left there with an Rx for 20 doses of imitrex. Insurance covered all of them. No questions asked.
There is hope. In 26 years this is the first CH educated ER Doc I have encountered. He also made an interesting and candid remark when I suggested that all the others wanted to administer narcs for the pain.
Simple he says. Th ERs are busy and they just want to get you out of there.

Don so sorry they are back. I am glad you lucked up on a Educated Doctor. Aso glad insurance covered the imitrex!
Hope this cycle is short ! Glad you have some meds to get ya through! We are here if you need us.

Glad you had a good ER experience, Don. Whenever I have to go in for whatever reason, I make it pretty clear to them the knowledge I have about my condition. They usually give me more credit, then. A shame it has to be that way, but it does.
I'm working on educating my fellow nursing students bit by bit.

I wonder however, when I read statements such as the ones found on the National Headache Foundation website on:
"The Emergency Room Guide
to Distinguishing the Legitimate Headache Sufferer from the Drug Seeking Patient"
Quote:Patient keys to drug abuse:
• Patient makes frequent visits to the Emergency Room.
• Patient states multiple allergies to non-narcotic interventions.
• Patient has extensive knowledge of drug action.
• Patient requests specific medications and dosage.
• Patient has multiple prescriptions for analgesic medications.
• Patient requests large number of pills and prescription refills.
• Patient has unusual, irrational stories.
• Patient's pain level is inconsistent with drug requirement.
• Patient has multiple doctors and/or multiple treatment sites.
• Patient is using increased amount of alcohol.
• Patient does not make provision for follow-up care.
• Patient's symptoms do not fit a diagnostic pattern of headache

Now, what do they consider a legitimate patient?

I have a question....if you go to the emergency room with a CH, what do they give you? They normally give me Demerol and Visteril. I haven't been formally educated about what I should be receiving at the ER since I suffer from CH.

Well, whats affective for you to abort? Thats what you should be treated with. They come near me with the demerol and they have a fight on their hands.
Tell THEM whats effective for YOU.
