Does anyone else have "BLACK SPOTS
" in their vision?  I get these sometimes during an attack some times they are little spots sometimes they are bigger but they freak me out either way.  Just wonder about the rest of you.

Thanks guys

I go completely blind in the "affected" eye.  And all during my cyle, I have "blank spots" in my vision, that comes and goes, a real pain in the ass, for golf, pool and bowling.  Grin

They could be, I have no idea.  Someone had described them to me as "spots" once...so I was wondering.

I get heavy duty aura, but it has never been associated with migraine or cluster headaches.  Mine involves a blind spot in the center of my vision, and  flashes, lightning bolts, and jaggedy lines in the peripheral vision. The blind spot usually starts out as a blink, but can park itself for 10-15 minutes.  Somebody posted a link to a graphic a while back that gave a good picture of what aura is like.

Aura is not in the eyes - its caused by a 'spreading depolaraztion' of the visual cortex in the brain.  Kinda like that part of the brain falls asleep (though its not normal like sleep).

Here's one graphic - its not bad, but I've seen a better artistic interpretation somewhere.  This one does show the blind spot.

Thanks for the links for the visuals.  Nope, I've never seen anything like that.  Now I know what an aura is.  Still...wtf is a cycle?   Angry

Usually cycle refers to an episode of cluster headaches - like "my July and August cycle"  that I get most every year.  Or are you chronic and making a joke?

what you're referring to here is phosphenes and they are a common prelude to migraine but some cluster sufferers experience this as well.

for a migrainer, it's usually a signal that they've got about 20 minutes to get into a dark room and ...uh...get the bucket ready.  Sad   For classic migraine, this is indeed the start of the aura phase, next comes numbness of face/hands, general confusion, and fear for what lies ahead in the next 12 - 72 hours.  Seeing those spots is similar to looking at something too bright, a flash camera, shiny chrome on a vehicle or the sun.  But you don't recover in the same way.  Floridian's exactly right though - it's not in the eye, it's in the brain so closing your eye doesn't make it go away - you can just see the "shimmeries" brighter with your eyes closed.  It's a horrible feeling.  I had it last for about 45 minutes yesterday and was trying to figure out how I could make the 30 minute drive home (not being able to see completely is sometimes not a good idea when you're driving in heavy traffic!).  Lucky for me, yesterday I was blessed with only an occular migraine as that link describes instead of a full blown one.  It still scares the crap out of you and the ONLY thing that makes it go away is time.

Good thing to tell your boss though - "you'll have to excuse me for half an hour.  I'm having a vascular event at the moment".  It's a feeling you can't put into words, really, without experiencing it and even just seeing those pictures is enough to make a migrainer cringe.  It's not fun.
