In search of the cluster bible (kinda)

Hello everyone! Ok. I'm searching for a book on cluster headache. A truly good book, not just a book restating all I know (that the pain is severe etc...) I would like to have something with testimonial, research, treatment etc... Have you ever seen a book like this? If yes, please respond. If not, then maybe we should write one ourself. You know, kind of "Cluster headaches for dummies" or "the bible of cluster headache". I don't really know why I'm looking for that but I sure would be glad to find something like that on the market. How many time do I have to explain to my family and all? Even if I direct them on the web... They tend to take everything on the web with a grain of salt. If only it was printed in a book! A book, for reference. I think that it might even be helpfull when I go to the hospital. More tahn half of the time, they don't know what I'm talking about (when I can talk) and what to do with me! (Once I had a crisis in front of a friend. Well, he called the ambullance. Once at home, they recognized never having heard of 'Cluster Headache'. They even told me that they think I was on dope and refused me oxygen!) Thank you.

You can start by looking the info in the buttons to the left. There's some pretty good non-fiction there. Ramon

Someone asked about this book awhile back. Go to ebay. They have a couple listed. "Cluster Headaches & Related Conditions" by Peter Goadsby & Jes Olsen.

I agree with Thomas, read everything here and at OUCH. Plus if you see a post by Floridian read it! If you any questions about it, he is always happy to answer.

HANDBOOK OF HEADACHE MANAGEMENT, 2nd ed., Au. Joel Saper, MD, 1999, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. A highly condensed volume for doctors but good for "advanced" clusterheads who have a grasp of medical terminology and medications. Covers all types of headache with the section on cluster being brief. Sections on general considerations in treatment and on medications are important. MANAGEMENT OF HEADACHE AND HEADACHE MEDICATIONS, 2nd ed. Lawrence D. Robbins, M.D.; pub. by Springer. $49 at Amazon.Com. This volume is better organized and easier to read for nonprofessionals compared to Saper's book. It covers all types of headache and is primarily focused on medications. While the two chapters on CH total 42-pages, the actual relevant material is longer because of multiple references to material in chapters on migraine, reflecting the overlap in drugs used to treat. I'd suggest reading the chapters on migraine for three reasons: he makes references to CH & medications which are not in the index; there are "clinical pearls" about how to approach the treatment of headache; and, you gain better perspective on the nature of headache, in general, and the complexities of treatment (which need to be considered when we create expectations about what is possible). Finally, women will appreciate & benefit from his running information on hormones/menstrual cycles as they affect headache. Chapter on headache following head trauma, also. Obviously, I'm impressed with Robbins' work (even if the book needs the touch of a good editor!) (Somewhat longer review/content statement at 3/22/00, "Good book...." HEADACHE HELP, Revised edition, 2000; Lawrence Robbins, M.D., Houghton Mifflin, $15. Written for a nonprofessional audience, it contains almost all the material in the preceding volume but it's much easier reading. Highly recommended.

Read Goadsby's book last year (Jack Boyd bought it and circulated it to hub and myself). If you go PubMed and read the articles, you will get the same info that you will get from the book. The book basically just restates or quotes these articles.
