Sleep Apnea??

What do you all think of the theroy that CLusters can be triggered or an underlying cause of Sleep Apnea?  How many have been tested for it and how many have it?  My husbands comment is if I cant get a doc to prescribe O2 for Clusters maybe if I can get diagnosed with Sleep Apnea, then I might get my O2 that way.

Whatcha think guys?

I know there's a lot of stuff in the archives about this subject, was one of the big topics of discussion when I first found this place so many years ago.  Welcome to the most painful hall of fame in the world Mr Y.

The first year I finally got treated for sleep apnea I found out I had clusters with my first 10, they were 7's max before that. They may be related for me but treatment for sleep apnea either made clusters worse, or they have no relation with each other.

Not eveyone who gets clusters has sleep apnea.
Not everyone with sleep apnea suffers from clusters.
However, If you have a GENETIC DISPOSITION for both clusters AND sleep apnea the one could be making the other worse.

An interesting thing about sleep apnea is that it causes blood vessels to constrict. Long periods of apnea lead to Hypoxia. Hypoxia tends to cause blood vessels to dilate.

Also, sypathetic nerve activity is increased in sleep apnea, but this is likely not relevant as it is the parasympathetic nervous system and the trigeminovascular system which are active during a cluster attack.

One study found that apnea or related sleep breathing disorders occured in more than half of all clusterheads.  One pattern or rule of thumb .... if sleep apnea is a trigger for you, your headaches are more likely to occur soon after falling asleep (first half of night).  If they start around dawn, apnea is less likely to be a trigger.

See:
Neurology. 2000 Jun 27;54(12):2302-6. /  Neurology. 2001 Apr 10;56(7):984.   Sleep disordered breathing in patients with cluster headache.   Chervin RD, Zallek SN, Lin X, Hall JM, Sharma N, Hedger KM.

There was a discussion of this issue a few months ago - somebody (an airline pilot) was interested in this approach, got a mouthpiece to wear at night to prevent apnea, and said that the clusters stopped cold.  Not a surefire cure for all people, but might be worth a shot.  Apnea itself is worth treating.

I have a combination of central and obstructive apnea....

It had dissapeared after I had a deviated septum repaired and my nose roto rootered....  but the tissues in my nose have returned to where they were and I am back almost to where I was before.....

My neuro is convinced that the 2 are related.

http://www.respiratoryreviews.com/sep00/rr_sep00_clusterheadaches.html

But then again there are many that do not have CH and do have apnea....

My CH's are indescriminate of time, place, or venue. Maybe it is related to poor sleep or lack of O2... I am not sure...
