How Much Is Too Much ?

O.k. I've been attacks by this bastard 3 times in the last 12 hours. 2 A.M., 6 A.M. & 10 A.M.

Each time I've used 1/3 shot of Imitrex totalling 1 full shot. Luckily they where all aborted reasonably quick.

I am starting to feel another attack. Hoping it will hold off a little while. I've gotta leave for work in 1 1/2 hrs. and can't afford to miss.

How safe is it to keep injecting. I gotta do something quick.

I use the Nasal Spray but I think the max is 2 FULL shots a day. Could be wrong. The packaging should tell you.

All else fails, read the directions. Although,  I never read directions.  Grin

I thought it was two full doses of any Triptan (i.e. you can't count Imitrex and Zomig as different, they are all Triptans)  in 24 hours, therefore any 'splits' are Ok as long as you don't exceed this.

It is two doses.......You need to do the oxygen. This is my first time on it. I have a small portable that I have been taking to the office. 10 mins and it starts to break up. I have been have 6 attacks a day for almost 2 weeks. 3 major. If not for the oxygen I would not make it thru the day.

Thanks for the info fellow Clusterheads.

I couldn't wait around for a reply after posting. As you know the Beast comes quick.

I took another 1/3 shot and sat it a super hot dark shower. It worked again for the 4rth time today.

So far so good. Gotta leave for work now.

PS. Got my appt. with the doc tommorro. Sure hope I have no problem getting O2. Been waiting to see him a month now.

When I'm in cycle I take as many abortives as I need, I don't care how many I'm supposed to take.  I use the old "I'm twice as big as a normal man, so I can take twice as much medicine if I have to." logic.

Dude! That much Imitrex can be very hard on the ole ticker. You might want to talk to your neuro about o2 therapy, if you haven't already.

Ok maybe I am lucky but I could not wait to get in with my neuro to get the O2.  I went to my regular doc and told him 02 or a bullet. He got me the 02. Of course insurance will not pay until the neuro clears it. It has been costing me $20 every other day but it is so worth it.

My point is talk to your reg. dr. so that he will know how to help.

The doc I will see tommorro is a regular doc. I quit going to a neuro years ago. My regular doc is just as helpful as a neuro and it's less hassle to get approved with insurance.

Problem is he is too good. Always takes a month to see him. The other 3 docs in that office suck. They don't understand cluster headaches at all. They give me 2 Imitrex injections and think that will last a month. HA HA.

Well Captain,

I gotta say I too have done more than the recommended daily allowance. Not intentionally, but I did end up taking four full shots in 24 hrs. last cycle. How much is too much? Well, if your liver, kidneys, heart or any combination of the same suddenly fail to keep working properly......................Its a pretty good bet that it was too much. Cheesy

be careful and do the O2 thing.......

BlueMeanie,

Next time you're at the neuro, ask for an over-ride for more imitrex from the insurance company.  The doc has to send a form to your insurance requesting it.  After this, they're almost obligated to authorize the amount requested. I started off with 2 boxes per month and now get 9 boxes.  Save during the good months for the bad.  Always have enough.

Here's a good source for vials and insulin syringes for dividing your doses:

Incidently, if my alternative treatment works for my pending cycle this March, I will not need this abortative anymore. I'll keep this board informed on my progress.
