Headaches that start in neck-what are they called?

A long time back I remember reading about another type of headache that resembles CH but I guess it wasn't. It had something to do with the neck and if I remember correctly, it always started in the neck. I thought I had saved the website that discussed it, but I can't find it. These types of headaches had a specific name but they resembled clusters very closely I think. I wanted to pass this info along to someone who suffers HA's but no diagnosis yet. Just incase it could help.. thanks to anyone who can help!

Lori Do you mean neck as in base of the skull, or neck as in where your jugular is? W

Could it be SUNCT = Short-lasting unilateral neuralgiform headaches with conjunctival injection and tearing. These headaches can be triggered by movement of the neck. Or look here, from the OUCH website. http://www.clusterheadaches.org/library/general/ihs.htm

Good link Bob Reason I asked is that there is a very specific type of headache originating in the brain stem area of the head/ top of neck called a BAM!(Basilar arterial migraine.) There are other concerns with this type of headache which aren't mentioned in the article which Lori's friend needs to be aware of if it is this type. Wendy

Thanks guys! I think it was Cervicogenic. Pubgirl, I'm not exactly sure at what exact point in the neck it begins. I just know it always starts in her neck (she has had several neck injuries also from car accidents) and it mimics both migraine and clusters to some extent. I just know she suffers greatly and she's a close friend. I just want to pass along info that might help her get better treatment. Thanks again and tis the season to be jolly!

Lori If it is cervicogenic headaches there is an organisation similar to OUCH for cervicogenic headache sufferers. Don't know the url but I'm sure a websearch would find it. Wendy
