Update on dad...

for those of you who are interested... A lot has changed in the last 2 weeks. First off, after seeming to be making a "miraculous recovery", is condition worsened for about a week. There was some type of infection found in one of his lungs. While that seems to be clearing up, it seems now that the cancer may have now spread there. The report from the cancer clininc drew "mixed reviews". The main tumor was actually shrinking as a result of the chemo. Another tumor remains unchanged in size. BUT, now it seems that it has spread to his kidneys and one of his lungs (unconfirmed). He is up and around. We went for a 15 minute walk around the hospital the other day and he only had to sit down once, so he is definitely regaining some of his strength. He was told by the cancer doc that he should continue with the chemo. His reaction was to simply turn and walk away, muttering obscenities under his breath. I'm sure if he hadn't lost so much of his strength in the last while, that doc would have been out-cold on the floor. Needless to say, his mind is made up regarding any further chemo-therapy. BUT THE REALLY GOOD NEWS IS..... He's being released from the hospital today. There was a bit of a scare because of a cold that my mom had and his immune system being as bad as it is, but she seems to have got rid of it. While I realize the chances of him recovering are slim, I'm just ELATED that he'll be able to comfortably spend some time at home. My 2 brother's from out of town are coming in for the weekend with their families. It'll be the first time ever to get a picture of the entire family, including the 2 youngest grandchildren. That's about it for now. Thanks to all for your emails, thoughts, prayers and vibes. grant

Great news, Grant! The Big Guy, up above, has given you some extra time to spend with him. Enjoy it! Make the most of it. Thanks for the update. I have been wondering how he was doing. Now we know. But how are YOU, your Mother and your brothers doing? More prayers heading you way. Keep us informed. Chuck

Hey Grant, My biggest regret was not taking more pictures. They will be very comforting in the coming months! Enjoy your time with him now. Tell him you love him everyday. All of these things will be a comfort to you after he is gone! Patrick

Hi Grant, It's good to hear that your dad is coming home. Enjoy your time with him. The decision to go on with chemo or not is a tough one for many cancer sufferers. I know a lot who believe it's not the cancer that kills you, it's the chemo. Tell him to stay strong, he's got a lot of support from people he doesn't even know. I'm keeping him in my prayers. I hope that you & the rest of the family are doing well. Virginia

Oh my Grant, what news!!!!!! so happy for you!! You know, I here have prayed and kept you guys in my thoughts.........we talk of miracles?? - well, perhaps we should look further into this situation and realize that "THE" miracle we get, is not always the one we seek. I think your father regaining some strength and getting to come home for no matter what length of time is a miracle in itself, considering the dire straights he was in a few weeks ago!!! I am so glad to hear in your voice that you have accepted what you need to and realized the time you two will share is precious. Yep, truly a miracle in my eyes, that your dad is on his way home to be closer to the ones he loves at this time. Thank you for sharing with us, shows us you care about us too!!!! Keeping you in my thoughts, and hoping to catch up to you somewhere here soon, EDNA (sending you peaceful vibes and extra hugs)

Grant...... Sending good wishes for your Dad, and lotz of prayers your way. Guess it's hard for us to except some of the choices our family members make regarding treatment. But, after losing my sister a week ago to cancer, I have come to the realization that she and everyone else really has the right to choose. She, also, chose not to take the chemo. Those of us who have not been thru this terrible disease, really don't know what choice we would make. I will keep you and your Dad and your family in my prayers, sweetie. Let us know if there is anything you need. Lotz of prayers coming your way from Texas..... Jean

Thanks for the update, Grant. YOu and your family have been in my prayers for your father to regain strength, and for you all to have the time together for what you need before it is time for him to pass. Lord willing that will be quite some time yet, but that is in His hands. I appreciate the love and compassion you show toward him and your mom. So many people (are clusterheads different?) don't take the time for anyone but themselves. I also appreciate the way you reach out to others of us who are hurting even though you are going through one of the most difficult times one can go through. Please pass along our good wishes both to your Dad and your Mom. Tell them we are praying for them. Jerry

I completely understand the chemo decision and think it is for the best. Now, gather around and hear his stories. Remember them and pass them on. Take this time to meet the MAN who became your father. Give him a hug from me (the one he doesn't know LOL) I'll send him strength of voice and body and an open door to his memories of special times. See quietly and listen with your heart beating loudly. Drink in the colors, tastes, smells and sounds of the simple purity of human love. Always remember.

Hey I just got home from an afternoon at my parents. My 2 brothers from out of town and their families came into town for the weekend and the whole family got together for supper. We spent the afternoon watching football and playing with the kids. It was pretty rough on dad; a LOT more tiring than he had expected. I think he was happy just to be home and surrounded by the WHOLE family. I got to spend most of the afternoon showing neices and nephews how to play pool. Some learned quicker than others considering they ranged in age from 15 down to 2. The little guy was happy to just to be able to get on the table and chase the balls around. (He was pissed off when we had to put and end to that since he was starting to throw the balls at anyone who tried to take them away. ) Lots of pics were taken, but since none of us had a digital camera, pics won't be here for a couple days. Dad says hi even though I'm pretty sure he doesn't really understand the concept of another "family". (In fact, over the last year he has asked me how I can "waste so much time online with a bunch of strangers". LOL) Thanks everyone for prayers, vibes, etc and just being here (sorry if I'm starting to sound like a broken record) as this last while has been quite the emotional roller coaster ride (don't really know another way to describe it). I think its finally starting to level out for a while. grant
