Verapamil question

I have my first follow up appt with the neuro today at 11:30 am and I'm hoping he ups my verap from 240 mg to 480. I did have a question first. When my GP gave me a scrip for verap (before the neuro) it was for VERAPAMIL 180MG ER capsules. After getting the scrip from the neuro filled, I noticed the bottle says "Verapamil ER 240 MG Tablets, Generic for Calan SR 240mg Tablets". First of all, is there a difference between the capsules & the tablets? And, I can never remember...is ER the right type that I should be taking? Thanks! Virginia

Hey Virginia, I'm not a medical doctor, nor do I play one on TV but the only difference I see is with your ER & SR. I believe the ER stands for Extended Release in which the verapamil is metered out (from the coatings on the med) over time. The normal is standard release in which it is pretty much administered once it is passed into the bloodstream through the stomach (quickly). Mine is not ER and I take one in the morning and one at night. I don't know which is "more effective" for CH, but I believe that most people are not using ER. Hope this helps. BruceD PS. Go Pack Go

Hi V... I'm no doctor either ... but I believe the SR is the recommended release for clusters (if SR means 'instant release'). I don't think there is any difference in capsule and pill....Blake has been given both by the same pharmacy as ordered by the same doctor. Good luck, Sweetie.... Jacks

OH! Sustained Release! I was thinking it meant Slow Release! So I think it's weird that one of my bottles says ER & SR on the bottle. I better ask the pharmacist about this.
