Pain worse than CH...?

Most of us know the feeling of waking up in total pain in the middle of the night. It's happened to me hundreds of times and it's awful. Well, yesterday night, I woke up screaming in pain (which I never do when I get hit with CH). I scared the shit out my girlfriend even though she's used to me getting up in the middle of the night for a little dance. Was it a Kip 11? No, it was a cramp in the calf! I had not suffered one in years. God, it hurts! It only lasts a minute but it's excruciating. Anyone ever had that (I am not sure but I think only men have them... just like CH ? And if so, how do you compare that to a single CH attack? Now don't get me wrong. I still believe CH is the worst as fas as pain is concerned but I just wanted to get your thoughts on comparing one "calf cramp" (can I say that?) with one single CH attack... Take care! miCHel, not really looking forward to going to sleep tonight...

There you go again -- ONly men get them........ Toe cramps foot cramps and "calf cramps" (That's above the toes and foot right????) Yep women get them too along with PMS and lots of "strange cramps" that we ONLY tell men about........ Seriously, yeah they do hurt, but I can usually stomp my foot and scream and get rid of them. DOesn't work with CH - trust me I've tried...... But the good news -- it took your mind off your head didn't it. LOL!!! Sorry you were in pain..... Hugs BD

I used to get leg cramps - quite sever ones - when I was child. Now, I know we look at the past through rose coloured glasses, but as painful as they were (I used to wake up screaming, waking the entire household) they are nothing compared to going through CH... I'd say the pain was a lot like jamming your leg on something, like hitting your shin, really hard, on a metal bed frame (done that!)... It is bad... But at least you don't keep hitting it over and over and over again!! Hirvimaki

Acouple of years ago after shattering my heel, I got a cramp in the instep of my foot. Stomping my foot down was totally out of the question so instead I had to just lay there for about 15 minutes waiting for it to go away. I'm sure the neighbors heard a few new words that night. grant

Eat a Banana or two a week! Its the potasium (sp) that you are low of. Eat Bananas! I was at the drive way talking to my mom and dad one day and got a leg cramp. I mean I couldn't stand up I sat on the ground holding my leg. My Mom who when I was small always believed you pulled the leg to get the cramp out! I would never tell her I had one after she did that to me a few times I learned to keep my mouth shut. But she was there and there I was on the ground a grown woman YELLING " Mom don't touch me....MOM PLEASE DON'T !!!!! Yep they hurt a good bit!!! It always stopped the cramp but there was always a second there that I felt like she broke it! I just rub it out when it happens to me and she isn't around LOL!

Yepppir! Affectionately known as "charlie horses" in my family - yep... they HURT!!! Got them alllllllll the time when I was pregnant. Women get them all the time.. it's NOT just for men. One Dr. said they are caused by low potassium levels... (eat bananas... ) One Dr. said that it's dehydration.......... (drink lots of fluids........) Who knows.... but I find that standing up REAL quick and standing on that leg..... straightening out your foot.... takes it away immediately. Then you get a knot in your leg for a couple days..... and that's if you dont get stuck in the blankets. That's halarious....... in the middle of the night, woke up with a charly horse, trying to stand up, and you're all wrapped up in the blankets and cant find your way out.... LOL tina

I never had charley horses in my life "until" I started taking different medicines for CH. I don't know what meds you are taking but many, if not all, that I have taken list weakness in legs as a side effect. Boy do I have that too, but I also get the charley horses along with it. I keep "Legatrim" on hand for them. It can be purchesed over the counter, but check with your dr. first. My dr. suggested it when I first began to have them years ago and it does work for me. I agree, they are very painful. If your girlfriend is awakened by you anyway, have her rub the knot out of the muscle in your calf. Works great if theres someone there to do it for you. Good Luck Zonie

| 8 ounces of vinegar is like a whole bundle of bananas. ;D Calf cramp is no where near a CH! I'll take the cramp anytime over the beast. I cannot come up with anything close in comparison...although the ice cream brain freeze is about a 5. Brain freeze is up there with the calf cramp. Cramp...massage, brain freeze...stop eating ice cream for a few minutes   , CH...helpless for many. Hard to compare those.

| JDH, Jonny, & Hound Dogg, Compressed spinal nerves are the shits, no doubt about it! Maybe my CH isn't as bad as some because I still rank my worst "blown disk" pain as my official "10" and my worst CH a "9.5" ... my episodic CH at least takes an effing break once in a while. I think what makes the nerve pain worse is it's there when you get up and there when you go to bed ... and all points in between! Having been through that ... that's why my heart really goes out to the chronic CHer's here ... any pain that starts your day, fills it up, and ends it is some special sort of purgatory here on Earth

Thanks for all the replies! I agree with all of you: CH is definitely the absolute worse (at least for me). And it is very hard to compare with other types of pain. So, I need bananas and fluids: I am sur there's a good tropical drink that will accomplish both at the same time As for Sciatica, I never heard of it. But it sounds god damn awful. I wish we could find an ugly name like that for CH. Something that would be scary just to pronounce. It seems it would make it easier to explain. Have we ever started a thread to find a new name for CH (just for fun)? I propose Brainagonia... miCHel

My dr told me that lack of calcium was the cause of the daily leg cramps I was getting. I started drinking more milk and in a couple of weeks my leg cramps were gone.

Four to five dried apricots per day will help with cramps if you are deficient in potassium. Potassium content (in order of concentration low to high) is bananas, dried apricots, and crenshaw melon. Put it all in blender with some milk for calcium, and you'll have one heck of a brew. I have no idea what the consequences are for a potassium overdose. Maybe everthing goes limp?
