flu vaccine...

My workplace has just offered to pay for us to get a flu vaccine. I would like to participate this year, I've never had one before but since I was out of work for 2 months already I'd like to try it. I'm worried about any possible problems that could result in relation to cluster headaches. I'm taking varipamil daily. Any experience with this? Or am I just being paranoid? ...Mark..

I haven't had any first hand experience with this, but would think that if the flu wouldn't have adverse effects, neither would the flu injection. Best to ask a pharamcist or your doc.

I have been told by my doctor not to take the flu vaccine anymore. I have not taken a flu shot in many years and cannot remember if this is due to the cluster headaches or the medicine I am on. It was the nuerologist who told me not to take a flu shot. I was on Depakote at the time and am currently on Topamax. Todd

I've had a flu shot every fall for the last 10 years or so, and the insurance paid for it as I am considered a 'risk' case' with my diabetes. I never noticed any interaction with CH. That would come as a surprise anyway, as the flu shot fiddles with the immune system, something with no connection at all with CH. PFNADs Ueli

My Neuro is the one who gave me my flu shot last year. I'm sure I'll have him do it again this year. I've had the pneumonia shot as well *after* having had pneumonia 3 times in 5 years... that's one thing that'll kill you fast. One of the times I was in the hospital for it they said I was down to 10% lung capacity, and fading fast. It took about 8 weeks to recover. I haven't heard any stories about flu shots causing CH flare ups, and I doubt my neuro would be giving the shots if he had heard anything. -Fu

Getting the flu triggers my headaches quicker than the flu shot. I missed one year and ZAP!!! I'm gettin one as soon as the doc gets them in. Hugs BD

I've had shots every year for years. My Neurologist gives me mine most of the time and never charges for them. Still PF for 12 years.....who knows? Maybe it's what killed my CH back in 1991. I doubt it has an effect on your clusters. Charlie

5-string As others above - I've had them for about 15 years and no difference either way. I have seen a drop in flu rates tho and that's sure worth it!! Only thing you may have to watch for is egg allergy - the vaccine is made in an egg base. Best of luck and be pain free!! Ross
