Just learned of this site sad to see so many people here but good to know I'm not alone. I do have a question I have been taking Imitrex but recently my doc is wanting me to try Frova but from what I read it isn't for CH . Has anyone tried this?

Greetings!  I too am new to this site, but just the support I have gotten in a few days is incredible.

I take Imitrex - when I cannot get to my beloved O2.  I'm afraid I know nothing about Frova.

Welcome!  And I hope you find this site useful and comforting.

Welcome.

I took Frova this time around for the first time.  Started with 2.5 mg per day before I went to bed.  Dr. kicked it up to 5 mg per day.  The biggest difference from other cycles was that I had fewer attacks at night.

This alone will place it on my hit parade when I am visited next time.  Sleep...good.

Donv
I did a search on Frova a while ago for someone else (it's probably out of date now so worth doing again)
From what I read, people found it similar to Zomig (its a similar Triptan developed for Migraine treatment) i.e. worked for some for the lower level attacks, worked for others as a short term reducer/preventer if taken before sleep but was not of much use for the full scale attacks either in efficacy or speed of results. The other interesting thing I read was that for some people it actually was causing migraine type headaches where the person had never had them before.

The cynics among us reckon that Frova/Zomig etc are often prescribed instead of Imigran/Imitrex because they are MUCH cheaper.

Hope this helps (it's called Migard in the UK by the way if anyone from over here reads this)

Welcome to the family, but sorry you had to find us.

Can't help you with the frova, my doctor mentioned it to me, but I sure didn't want to switch from trex.  Imitrex is always a sure thing for me.

Donv,

Yo mate. Welcome.  I am TOTALLY unqualified to answer any questions concerning pharmaceuticals, but that’s never stopped me in the past. You’re using Imitrex......hopefully either injectible or snortable. That’s the beauty of Imitrex.....both of those are fast acting, and suitable for a quick abortion (CH, that is). Frova, Maxalt, Zomig, Amerge, Axert, et.al., mostly come in pill form, which makes them a tad slow on the uptake for squashing a HA pronto. The difference is...........most of those pills have a MUCH LONGER half life.......they stay active in your system for a lot longer. Far as I’m concerned, any drug that ends in “Triptan” can’t be all bad. Frovatriptan has a pretty decent half life, which is why your doc may have recommended it. Even so, all Triptans are classified as Abortives (last time I looked). The REAL trick is to get on a decent Preventative......Verapamil comes to mind for many, but there are others as well. Any Triptan, combined with the proper Abortive and a healthy dose of O2 (see side bar) used properly should keep you in good stead, unless you’re one of the incorrigible cases that has to walk on the dark side of Medical Utopia.

Best O Luck,
RJ

hello donv,

My neuro prescribed Frova to see if it would help prevent my CH's, it ended up giving me migraines and screwed up my usual times for my CH's.  Instead of my usual nightly visits, I would get hit during the daytime.  Even though it did not work for me, it might work for you.  Never know until you try.

Good Luck!

Welcome aboard and unlike Mr. Happy, I'll keep my mouth shut. Actually, he sounds pretty good to me.

If you stick around you'll find some good ideas on how to cope with this horror.

Here's one that worked for me:
