Looks like many good drugs are going to get cheaper and GSK may be in a bind without new drugs to keep the cash cow going like it has.

Of course the expiration of the patent on imitrex is discussed in the convention report as well Wink

Not the details that you provided, just the fact that the patent will expire.

Well I can't see many drug companies coming out of the woodwork to produce a generic version of Imigran/Imitrex ?

It's not just the drug that's important but the well researched and well trialed delivery system. Which I may add is under patient to Glaxo for another ten years ! From what I have been told most drug companies would find the cost of inventing, trialing and producing a new or similar delivery system prohibitive. Hence no mad rush by drug companies to do it  Shocked and we thought Glaxo were slipping  Lips Sealed

Mob, my understanding is that's why they have changed their stat dose system to the new one.  Regardless of the stat dose system, I use vials and a needle.  That method of delivery is not only cheap, it's already available the world through.

While you may not get a stat dose reproduced under generic names, I can imagine that many other pharm co's would be chomping at the bit to release a generic version that is simply in a vial.

Hi Cat,

There will always be a way around auto injectors Cat  Wink But I don't think there will be any rush to produce Imigran/Imtrex in vials by anyone or any other med for that matter.

The medical community are moving away from vials and administering medications that way because of the inherent risks involved. There are 800,000 needlestick injuries and potential exposures to bloodborne pathogens occurring each year in the US.

As recommended by your own Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) newly revised bloodborne pathogens standard. The new Safety Tip-Lok all-in-one delivery system is already in use for Hepatitis A and B vaccines in hospitals.

This of course is already spreading to many other areas because of peoples fears (always a good selling point)about cross infection and obviously the GSK machine both heightening and allaying those fears in one  Shocked

You may be right MOB. The thing is that there is no liability lawsuit if a needlestick injury occurs. Not if you get your own prescription and administer it yourself. That's how most of it will be administered. It will still be very profitable for GK to produce it and the generic companies to reproduce it.
Those are staggering figures you gave here but they will have minimal impact on it being reproduced. Now, if they can produce it with a chemical that will help me I'll be very happy (Read, since it doesn't help me I have no horse in this race and therefore am not coming from the "I hope" POV)
