Question about alcohol (trigger)

Alcohol triggers attacks for me, and of course the obvious solution is to avoid it. However, it does not ALWAYS trigger an attack. I have noticed in the past that if I "sip" a beer, mixed drink or whatever, I tend to be more proned to getting hit. What does sip mean exactly? 1 drink > 45 mins or so. If I "pound" drinks, I am normally "ok". Well, drunk, but normally I don't get hit. The intent is not to get shitfaced, but not to get hit either. Anyone have any experience with this other than avoidance? I would really like to hear of some of your personal experiences. Thanks, Chris P.S. I Really love those Orange smoothy things from TGIF's (wish they weren't alcoholic)

For me... I always get at least a kip 4 when I'm in cycle, and drink anything... 1 beer... 10 beers... doesn't matter... and the more I drink, the longer it hurts, and less effective the Imitrex is at aborting them... ... another thing I have dicovered, is that harder alcohol (especially Turkey) makes the pain even more terrible.. beer - k4 through 6... whiskey - nothing less than a k8... -Big Dan p.s. I've also noticed, that if you've still got alcohol in your system, your going to have a HA once any preventative you've taken has worn off...

I don't have any experience with slamming vs sipping. I can say this though; certain drinks are a trigger for me, certain other drinks are not. I follow this basic guideline: tequila = good...very very good rum = bad gin = good (as long as I am not left alone with anyone of the opposite sex that is not my husband) wine = iffy, sometimes ok, sometimes not corona = good Bud, Miller, etc = bad amaretto sours = oh ya....taste like lychee..good good whiskey = good vodka = iffy That's all my studies have proven thus far.

Hey Chris, I have noticed the exact same thing, i like beer, and I can put it away. I've been known to polish off a case in a day on the river. But under no cercumstance would I just drink one or two. My saying USED to be "if your gonna do then do it" no pissing around. Anyway, about three years ago, I went to a wedding, with the intentions of drinking fast and hard. I got a headache 7-8 maybe, I took a shot and hit the brewski's again, holy fuck then came a 10 this 10 lasted almost 4 hours and the shots didn't work, I honestly don't even know how I made it through that. Not to be mellow dramatic but If I didn't have kids and a wife that loves me I swear I would have checked out! Thats my story, and I have never touched a drink in cycle again. But I will say everyother time I did it that way it worked. But I'm just not prepared to dance with a 10 for 4 hours ever again. Good Luck and Good Vibes LEE

While in cycle I cannot drink beer at all but I can drink vodka and it doesnt trigger the CH. I will still get my normal hit during the night BUT if I drink ALOT of vodka I will not get hit. So what do I do? I try on the weekends to drink LOTS of vodka and I am alway PF that night. Too bad I couldnt do that during the week but I do need to pay the bills. I wondered if the reason is something similar to the dramamine thing that it might prevent you from going into REM sleep. Suzy who will be stocking up on my imitrex and vodka for next cycle...

Abstain from beer when in cycle. If we're out and I want to take a chance (and it is a chance), I'll have something with Vodka,.... like an olive. Steve G

Not a sipper, always been a pounder I can't drink at all when I'm in a cycle. It'll trigger a h/a everytime before getting through the first drink. Jim

That happens to me too. If I sip I get hit. If I drink steady and fast I don't get hit. It doesn't work ALL of the time, but a lot of the time. Wierd Huh?

Like Jonny, beer was never a trigger. I can't say I thought about it much and because I rarely drink alone, I probably drank very little. I was even less social than usual during a cycle. Keep up your experiments Georgia Charlie

Just thought that I would put my 2 penn'orth in. When I am in cycle even a sniff of the barmaid's apron will bring on a KIP 6 to 8 for several hours, but when out of cycle, some drinks do and some drinks don't. I have a personal theory that any drinks, alcoholic or not, that contain Aspartane (aka Aspartan and Aspartame, depending on where in the world you are), bring on a CH - I am almost certain that this is the situation for me, but as many (alcoholic) drinks do not contain a list of ingredients, it is difficult to be sure. So, lite beers, lo-cal mixers, industrially brewed spirits and wines give me CH, when in or out of cycle,, but 'good' booze, (Plymouth Gin, Californian wine etc.) leaves me completely unaffected when out of cycle, (except when drunk to excess of course !!!). Anybody else, have the same experience? Georgia, with the above in mind, I scoured your list of findings to see if it your experiments gave similar results but I kept getting side tracked by the report of your findings for Gin - I think that I would like to carry out a joint experiment with you with Plymouth Gin - what do you think? - if you can't find any, I will bring a bottle for each of us. Have a nice weekend. JoeKen.

Not sure I should be here, but it's as near as I'm going to get to finding out what is the correct name for my condition. Usually KIP 5 or below but last up to 16 hours and always one-sided, behind the eye, usually right but ocassionally left.
