Do a search on the internet for the dll's you need. Download and copy them to a floppy and then copy them to your boyfriends machine. That should do the trick. Hope this helps. Bryan

Red Hat 9.0 for power users Mandrake for first timers. Slackware for those that like to roll thier own. Debian just because it's good. SuSe because Germans just engineer the hell out of anything. FreeBSD 4.7 for those that really want to do something seriouse. My Web server (Apache), Email server (Qmail) and FTP server (Wu-FTPD) DNS server (TinyDNS) are all Red Hat. Just because I wanted to try it and am to lazy to change it My Toshiba Satellite laptop Mandrake 9.1 My home PC is a quad Xeon with a dual boot system. FreeBSD 5.0 (Beta) and Win 2003 server. I use Posstgres SQL for my database although I have Oracle 9i and DB2. I'm just to lazy to run Microsoft by itself. TTFN

And here I thought you'd of built your own Linux OS from scratch Kirk... LOL J.ten_Dam... You can install the Win98 OS on top of the existing installation, which should restore any missing or corrupted DLLs needed by Windoze itself (Remember to run Windows Update after the installation is done). If any of the DLLs are third party provided, just reinstall the programs that installed them. PFDAN............................ Drk^Angel P.S. Or ya can do like others said, and download 'em from the DLL download sites. DA

I just pull out the cassette tape with the appropriate file name on it, and stick it in the radio shack player and fast forward to the numbers that I scribled on the tiny little lable. Then I press play and listen to the funny noises for a little bit until I get to the second set of numbers that I scribbled down on the cassette tape label. I think I once tried to press play and fast forward at the same time to see if I could get the file to load faster, but that was definately a no/go. Sumthin like that. ;D

Thanks Kirk, sounds like you are a power user. E-mail on the way. Prense, What no punch cards? Joke, click start/program/accesseries/system tools/system information, when the program comes up click tools/system file checker/ click setting then check "check for deleated files" then run scan, you will be promted to replace deleated files from windows disk, the msn files won't be able to be replaced with this, unless you have the disk. You also can replace the files manually if you know the files location, windows system is ussually a good guess. Any apps missing files can also be fixed by reinstalling them, and as Drk says windows too. By the way if you have XP you are out of luck. Opus/Paul

As a Network Engineer, I would have to admit that Windows is the most insecure waste of money for sure. Having said that, I believe that majority of windows users actually left there mothers basement while growing up and enjoyed something called life. Although I must admit that a quad zeon will get you some tail most any night of the week, there is still hope for those who actually put down the cheetos and leave the house every now and then. Not to rip on power geeks as I have made an alright living ourt of tech but c'mon, when is the last time you rebuilt a carb?

Mark, Like I said you are "out of luck" jmin, You didn't totally direct your question so I will answer, I rebuilt a carb last week, so what, who doesn't. Although I am not a power user I had a lot of fun making my 450PIII with win98 seem as fast as a 1.7gigP4 on xp. I have been dreaming of that dual 3gig zeon with the scsi hard drives and rimms that I saw for 2 grand but since that is more than I am worth I guess I really don't want it becouse the case is too small. Say what you will about Windows...most of it is true...that being said I have a pretty nice box with XP Pro at home. I have had two (2) ! BSOD in slightly over a year...not bad for Windows. On my old 98 box I would get that many every 12 hours or so. You really gotta button up a Windows box, very insecure as shipped....imagine that! Hey Opus, system restore has saved my ass a couple of times so far. It ain't a cure all but it has it's place. I also did a tune-up on my old Ford just yesterday! Plugs, wires, cap and button, runs like a top! Vroom Vroom! Mark

Yes it counts. Point taken. ;D In my line of work I am constantly dealing with people who know a fair amount and then talk down to or belittle those who are not quite as savy. This is normally just arrogance and an attempt to make up for a small "cpu". Kind of like the middle aged balding man driving a convertable BMW. I can see now that you all were just having fun at no ones expense and therfor retract my earlier statement regarding your mothers basement. BTW - I've got my eye on that BMW but the hairline has not reached the point of justification yet.

Well it looks like the geeks on this board have some mechanical ability too, I'm really not a geek just a wannabe. Some day I will grow up and learn how to really program, Anyone out there think Python is worth learning. VB seems bizzar to me. Mark, I think I have a crash proof win 98 installation now. Changing the shell really makes a diffrence, though I will see what happens when I try to merge those two 500meg tiff files. Opus/Paul

Hey Opus, that other 98 box was a Compaq art deco toaster looking kinda crap. I think the PSU were junk. PC would only run a few hours at a time before CRASH. Later! Mark

Frank, The person who started this thread has yet to give us an update, so we will hang out here until they do. Mark, You keep referring to machines as to what there OS's are. You can run Win 98 on old and new machines, with a lot of tweaking Win 98 can approach a real operating system with few crashes, my mother has a 2 gighz P4 with XP pro and my old machine can run rings around hers. As for hard number crunching hers wins every time but XP slows every thing down so much it makes my 450 mhz look like a champ. If you want I can send you some links, I even found a way to fix crash happy windows me. Andy, I just got Roxio with Norton system works and I was thinking about trying it, How bad does it fill your hard drive? I still like to do recovery from the Ultimate boot disk. Kirk, Python is very intriguing, I want to see if my daughter could learn to write simple programs on it like I wrote Basic programs on the commodore 64.

Opus, i got Norton systemworks pro that came with Roxio go back basic. I upgraded to go-back 3 deluxe for around $20. I think that it only uses about 10 percent of your hard drive. Its well worth it. I havent tried Ghost yet. It looks to be usefull also. Happy computing ...............andy
