A question on wine

Has anyone found that wine is their only alchol trigger. Is there any other drink that dosen't trigger a ch for anyone. I thought I'd ask rather than experiment. Wine is out for me during a cycle.

When in cycle, I could not drink any alcoholic beverage. When not in cycle, I could drink anything and as much of anything alcoholic as I wanted.

Sometimes certain alcohols will trigger an attack for me. Rum sometimes will. Wine sometimes will. Tequila never has. Gin never has. Beer sometimes will. I am not episodic, so I don't know about in or out of cycles.

When in a cycle I cannot drink any alcohol. Any alcoholic beverage is OK out of cycle. Never has been an exception to this in my 32 years of CHs.

For me, it tends to depend on where I am in the cycle. At the beginning, red or rose wines and beer will trigger but white liquors (vodka, gin, white rum) will not... but later, closer to peak... ALL alcohol will...even N/A beer will trigger one with it's little .05%. Sherry

Red wine won't trigger one for me, but it will aggravate my head....if it is already hurting. That's a shame, because I really don't like white wine.

Tann, Any, any, any kinda alcohol is a trigger in cycle here.......whether it's sherry in the soup, beer in the batter, or cognac in the coffee. The only wine my Wife knows is: "I wanna go to Miami, I wanna go to Miami...." Wino Wisdom, RJ

| Holy cow Georgia. Take it easy. Alcohol never had an effect on my episodic attacks. Charlie

Long before I discovered my headaches were called cluster headaches I had discovered beer and wine triggered a headache. By trial and error I found that I had less triggers with Scotch. I now leave all booze alone while in cycle.

Finally, a category for me: “I’ll take--‘Wine as a trigger for Cluster Headaches’ for $2,000 please, Alex, and… uh…can I double down, or do we lay odds on the back line here?”. My mom, not only named me SommelierCH, I are one. I drink wine for a living. For 10 weeks every two years, I fail at my job. Cluster Headaches, are a wonderful gift from god, that immediately breaks my 2 year cycle of cheap wine, slow women and hot cars (mostly the radiator, but lack of Freon must enter in somehow). From the start of my last cycle, at 5:24 am Oct 20, 2002 until the end of the cycle Dec. 29, 2002, not one drop of alcohol crossed my lips (except for, oddly enough, the Sherry in the Ginger Soup at Thanksgiving Dinner. She didn’t tell me it was in there, because she thought that all the alcohol would be cooked off. WRONG) For Newbie Clusterheads (Episodic, with less than 2 cycles under their belt), who drink, I will offer these thoughts: THIS IS THE (THE, THE, THE) MOST COMMON TRIGGER, THAT WE KNOW OF, AS CLUSTERHEADS. ALCOHOL DEFINES THE WORD “TRIGGER” IN OUR VOCABULARY! Unless you know your system and cycles, do NOT rely on medical literature relating to Alcohol and Clusters, or even relating to triggers in general. The general consensus in the med. literature, is that alcohol will trigger a Cluster in a very short time (if that person is sensitive to alcohol). I have been triggered by alcohol up to 12 hours later (maybe more, I didn’t keep a headache diary back then). How do I know? I finally got to know my system and learned the patterns of my cycle. Without any triggers, I always get hit with “the big one” within 15min-2 hrs, after falling asleep. The random daytime Kip 10’s, were the direct result of alcohol intake, many hours before. I will also say that, I have gotten Kip 10’s within 10 min. of alcohol consumption. I wanted a beer so bad, when my last cycle decided to extend itself for 2 weeks, that I made a pact with God, that if my cycle broke and I could drink beer again, I would be so satisfied with non-alcoholic beer that I would only drink N/A beer for a month. That was the easiest promise I’ve ever kept. ClusterPain is not worth the price for experimentation about which color of alcohol sets you off. For those of you who drink, try to see this as an opportunity to detox and clean out your system, I use massive amounts of cigarettes and gallons of fresh ground coffee. David J.

I was drinking Vodka when I first got mine. Haven't had alcohol since so I don't know about alcohol. Don't want to take a risk drinking any of it. Stuey

No booze whatsoever during a cycle. Almost instant trigger for me. My friends at Molson see their market shares go down for a few months every time. But don't worry, I compensate plenty during the rest of the year. Started drinking non-alcoholic beer during the last cycle. It's not very good but just holding the bottle makes me feel better. Maybe I have a problem... ;D miCHel

Ok, gotta say this...the reason I know that alcohol is a "trigger" for "an unscheduled CH" is that the attack hits me within 1/2 or usually LESS of imbibing. If you are getting hit 12 hours after drinking....I would say that that particular drink did NOT trigger a CH. If you don't get hit at all UNLESS you drink and if it takes over an hour before you get this "alcohol triggered" headache... I would venture to say that you are not getting clusterheadaches......
