Question,                Does nitroglycerine trigger a CH only in clusterheads or does it trigger a non clusterhead too?    ............andy

Wow Don, talk about taking one for the team. You da man!
If you're gonna dance then that would be THE ultimate place to do it...lol, believe me I've done it in much worse places than a room full of neuros.
Have you ever taken nitro and are you sure it'll fire you up? Man, you might start a whole freakin' cycle by doing this and then where you gonna be?
Good luck with this whole thing brother, we're with you.

Hey Andy,

Nitro can cause pounding headaches in people without clusters.

I've had several  cardiac patients who have to put their nitro patches on their thighs because it gives them headaches.

I might have read somewhere that nitro does not induce CH attacks in out of cycle subjects. I could be wrong.

Simon Bower, originator of OUCH-UK, took a large whisky when in cycle to induce an attack; for a video, believe.

I think CJ is roght.  Nitro does not induce a cluster when you are out of cycle.  There is more going on during a cluster than just the dialation of the blood vessels (which is what nitro does).  Lots of other pain inhancers are also released during cluster which make the nerves more sensitive to pain.

Course, I'm wrong every once in a great while.

Also, if 2 people do it and one of them gets an Imitrex shot and gets up first, the drama also shows/compares how effective the overexpensive/underprescribable medicine is.

A good wallop of hootch will induce a whole lot more than a ch attack. I'll stick with the nitro.

I also would gladly attend. But who needs Nitro. 1 glass of cheap wine would make me full blown in 15 minutes. They get to see the onset and watch me change from Dr. Jekyl to Mr. Hyde. It aint a pretty sight though!

I was given nitro while not in cycle and it did not cause an attack.  I didn't get a headache at all.  Never took it in cycle though.

There are individuals who usually don't tend to get any kind of headaches, but they get them when taking nitro for they heart angina (but they don't get CH attacks, of cause...) - so nitro has to be dismissed for them and replaced by other meds.

Thus, a certain part of CHeads would get "normal" headaches (or a CH attack ???) if taking nitro out of cycle, the other part would not.

I started with a cluster yesterday on my way to see my neuro.

I was going to take an imitrex injection and decided that I would wait!

I got into the room with a 7/8 on the KIP scale and was pacing, holding my head, etc.  I thought the nurse was going to freak out... She didn't know what to do with me.   The door was open and a bunch of the people on the staff could see me with my CH.   The Dr. came in, brought imitrex and had me take it immediately.  I think it was an eye opener for some of them.

I have to say... they seem to be taking my CH's more seriously.

They didn't say much... but I was in the next day for a procedure (having a needle stuck through my cheek so they could inject anesthetic at various points in the nerves - btw... 3 days without CH & counting).

The nurses were always ok to me, but after my attack in front of them... they were downright falling down to try to help me.  I think seeing the level of pain is a real eye opening experience for a lot of medical professionals.
