Ergot med question

I keep seeing "methylergonovine maleate" in CH research as a preferred preventative. I don't recall seeing on here though. Anyone ever been prescribed it or have any knowledge of it? I looked it up on Rx.com and it is listed there as a vasoconstricting ergotamine.

This was one of the few things I tried but it didn't do a thing for me. I'm a big guy and always wondered if I was given a big enough dosage. I know that they have to be careful with this thing though. How are your other polls doing G? Charlie

That's an easy one, Georgia ;D Put methylergonovine maleate into the search box of http://www.rxlist.com and you'll find it's trade name: Methergine. For more detail: http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic2/methylerg.htm Methergine has been discussed on this MB before, as a replacement of the no longer available methysergide (Sansert, Deseril). Thanks, Charlie and Ueli. I knew about its brand name but I still can't find anything on this site about it. And Ueli, thats exactly why I was posting about it, as a possible replacement for Sansert.

I have never tried this particular med. but, years ago there was an ergotamine inhaler that worked wonders as an abortive. Oh how I wish for the good old days when that inhaler was around!!!! LOL

Ya'all know you can get Sansert in Canada right? I found a company called Norpharm who will supply 100 tabs for approx 70.00 us dollars. All they need is an Rx from your doc. I think I am going to try it - Sansert worked REALLY well for me and life has gone downhill since I have not been able to get it. My Doc says they took it off the market because it is a close cousin to LSD and will potentially cause hallucinations....I say bring 'em on if it gets rid of the beast..... Tracea

Thanks, Ueli. What started me asking in the first place was all the mentions of it while searching on Google. After I found that, I searched the archives (old board archives) and found nothing. I really appreciate you finding those links for me here. Sounds like a few people have had success with it. I tried Sansert a long time ago, and had a very nasty reaction after only one pill. I have had Cafergot, which did not work for me but did not give me any trouble either. And I had the DHE IV, which stopped the CH while in the hospital and brought them back with a vengeance - and I do mean it was the darkest, most painful time in my life - as soon as it was stopped. So dare I try another ergotamine? I still haven't found a preventative that works for me....any thoughts?

As I posted in an earlier message, my husband had I.V. administered DHE (Dihydroergotamine). Is on some preventive meds now after getting out of hospital, but has not had a heacache in over 3 weeks. WHAT A BLESSING. I know ergotamine comes in a few different forms, injection, nasal spray, I.V. It has been around for a long time but it seems (as in our case) not all Dr.s are willing to try it.
