How do you determine your cycle is done. I'm on the last 4 days of my prednisone taper and on 480mg of verapamil and am now 5 days without any shadows or ch's. I WANT A BEER!!. Is the only sure fire way to find out is to drink and see what happens? how long do you go pain free before trying this? any thoughts or suggestions welcome. thanks krista

I'd give it a week after the end of the predisone. Do't count the time on predisone. Just my experience. Predisone can fool you.

When I was episodic (ahhhh those were the days)
I would wait at least 10 days-2 weeks before I would attempt the beer.
Good luck and be careful

FWIW: I put a staple in my left nut.  If it hurts like hell the cycle is over.  If I can't feel it I must be having a headache and therefore the cycle is not over.

Krista, if you're tapering off prednisone, don't do the beer.  Usually the prednisone will not break the cycle and the CH return once the prednisone is tapered.  Wait until after you are off prednisone.  Only then will you be able to really determine if the verapamil is doing it's job and/or if you really want to try that beer.

My cycles tend to ramp down over a period of weeks or even months, just as they ramp up. I do not get suddenly hit, except for some time after this last attack. I have been getting almost constant shadows and for several months after the last cycle ended (?) I was getting real short, intense "jabs" that only last a few seconds but come on with such suddeness and intensity I am beginning to think I am morphing into a chronic and or a CPH sufferer.   Undecided Thanks Ted for the CPH information. For the last month or so I have been feeling pretty good....and a little Rum and Coke is pretty good after work.

Mark C, I haven't had a "cycle" for a number of years but I did have daily shadows from January thru May or so each year, except this year.

During those shadow periods I would get that "What the hell was that!!" jab-in-the-eye. It usually happened 1 or 2 times while relaxing in the evening.

This year no shadows and no jabs. Nothing has changed in my life style, I still don't have one  Embarassed But I am thinking about getting one. Someday. ;D

Mark C... You might wanna look at this...

4.1. Primary stabbing headache

Previously used term: Ice-pick pains, jabs and jolts, ophtalmodynia periodica

Description: Transient stabs of pain in the head that occur spontaneously in the absence of organic disease of underlying structures or of the cranial nerves.

Diagnostic criteria:
A. Pain occurring as a single stab or a series of stabs confined to the head and exclusively or predominantly felt in the distribution of the first division of the trigeminal nerve (orbit, temple and parietal area).
B. Each stab lasts for up to few seconds.
C. Stabs recur with a frequency ranging from one to many per day, in rare cases they occur repetitively over days.
D. No accompanying symptoms.
E. Not attributed to another disorder.

Comment: In a single published descriptive study, 80% of the stabs lasted 3 seconds or less. The occurrence in status lasting up to one week (active period) was reported. Stabbing pains are more commonly experienced by people subject to migraine (about 40%) and cluster headache (about 30%), in which case they are felt in the site habitually affected by headache. Stabs may change from one area to the next in either the same or the opposite hemicranium. When strictly localized in one particular area, diagnosis depends upon the exclusion of structural changes at the site of pain and in the distribution of the affected cranial nerve. Positive response to the indomethacin administration is reported in non controlled studies.

KLP I agree with Eyes. If you are still on Prednisone stay off the booze. Chances are you are just on a Prednisone holiday. If you manage at least a week after the pred has finished without a HA then you have a good chance of the cluster being over. My many experiences with pred over the past few years says don't hold your breath hoping they are over, or as Arnie says "I'll be back".

I hope not for your sake.
